If One Day You Forget Me

He Couldn’t Remember Her Name, But He Missed Her Every Day

True Love Bookstore & Cafe (The Story of Us-Hallmark)
Emma used to believe that love had to be something extraordinary—grand promises, beautiful flowers, and moments that made the whole world jealous. But then she met Noeh, and she realized that love could be much quieter than that.

Sometimes love was simply someone remembering to bring an umbrella before the rain started. Sometimes it was a hand pulling out a chair for you without being asked. Sometimes it was a pair of eyes that searched for you first in every crowd.

Emma owned a small bookshop at the end of an old street, where the air always smelled of paper and coffee. Noeh appeared there on a rainy August afternoon. He stood at the door, soaked from head to toe, his hair dripping with rainwater and his eyes carrying the exhaustion of someone who had been lonely for a very long time.

“Excuse me… may I come in and wait until the rain stops?”

Emma looked up from her book and smiled softly.

“Of course. No one gets turned away here because of the rain.”

Noeh smiled back—a small, tired smile that Emma would later remember for years.

After that day, he kept returning to the bookshop. At first he stayed for a few minutes, then for hours, and eventually there were evenings when he remained until Emma closed the shop.

One night, while they were arranging books on the shelves, Noeh suddenly asked,

“Emma, do you think people can meet the right person at the wrong time?”

She tilted her head and thought for a moment.

“Maybe. But I think if someone is truly the right person, they’ll find a way to stay.”

Noeh was silent for a long time before whispering,

“I wish I could believe that too.”

There was a sadness in his voice so deep that Emma felt it immediately, but she didn’t ask any questions. She believed that when someone trusted you enough, they would tell you their pain in their own time.

As the months passed, love arrived quietly, like rain soaking into the earth.

Noeh began cooking for her. He pretended to be annoyed whenever she skipped a meal.

“You can’t live on books and coffee forever.”

Emma laughed.

“And what do you live on?”

He looked at her, his eyes softening.

“Lately? Probably these evenings with you.”

Her heart trembled.

It was the first time she realized that a single sentence could make someone feel completely loved.

A year later, on the anniversary of the rainy day they met, Noeh took Emma to the lake. The city lights shimmered on the water like fallen stars.

He pulled a small ring from his pocket.

“Emma, I can’t promise you a perfect life.”

“I can’t promise I’ll never make you cry.”

“But I can promise that no matter what happens, I will always choose you.”

Tears filled Emma’s eyes before she could answer.

“Yes. I’ll marry you.”

Noeh held her tightly.

“Thank you for coming into my life.”

Emma had no idea that happiness could be so fragile.

Two months before their wedding, the accident happened.

That night the rain was pouring heavily. Emma stood in the cold white hallway of the hospital while the doctor’s voice echoed as if from very far away.

“The surgery was successful… but he has suffered damage to the part of the brain related to memory.”

Emma burst into tears the moment she heard the word successful. She thought everything would eventually be fine.

Until Noeh opened his eyes.

He looked at her for a long moment, polite but distant.

“I’m sorry… who are you?”

Her world stopped.

The man who had promised to always choose her no longer remembered that she existed.

Emma forced a smile, though her lips were trembling.

“My name is Emma.”

Noeh frowned slightly.

“Do we know each other?”

That question cut through her heart more painfully than any scream could have.

The days that followed were the hardest of her life. Emma visited him every day. She told him about the bookshop, about the stray cat that slept by the door, about the nights they had eaten instant noodles together because they had forgotten to buy groceries.

Noeh listened carefully, but his eyes still held only the kindness one gives a stranger.

One afternoon he asked quietly,

“Did you love me very much?”

Emma froze.

She looked at the man who had once been her whole world and nodded.

“More than anything.”

Noeh lowered his eyes.

“I’m sorry I can’t remember you.”

Emma turned away quickly as tears filled her eyes.

“You don’t have to apologize.”

But the words she could not say were:

I’m the one who’s hurting, not you.
