Chapter 1: What Are These Tiny Bathroom Insects?
Many homeowners have noticed small, fuzzy-winged insects resting on bathroom walls, ceilings, or near sinks and showers. These insects are commonly known as drain flies, sometimes called moth flies or sewer flies. Although they are tiny and do not bite humans, their presence often indicates that something in the environment is allowing them to thrive.

Drain flies are attracted to damp locations where organic matter accumulates. They often lay eggs inside drains, pipes, and other moist areas that contain bacteria and decaying debris. A bathroom can provide the perfect breeding ground, especially if drains are rarely cleaned or if hidden moisture exists behind walls and fixtures.
One reason these insects are difficult to eliminate is that killing the visible adults does not solve the root problem. The larvae remain hidden inside drain slime, where they continue to grow and eventually emerge as new flies. This is why homeowners may notice the insects returning again and again despite repeated cleaning.
While a few drain flies are not usually a major concern, a growing population can indicate that excess moisture has been present for an extended period. In some cases, it may even suggest a plumbing leak or poor ventilation that needs attention.
