5 Strange Feelings at Night That People With Heart Problems Should Never Ignore

Nighttime is when your body is supposed to slow down and recover. Your heart rate usually decreases, your muscles relax, and your breathing becomes more regular.

But for some people—especially those with heart disease, heart failure, high blood pressure, or other cardiovascular conditions—certain symptoms may become more noticeable after lying down or during sleep.

The image suggests that people with heart disease may experience five “strange” feelings at night. While these symptoms can occur with heart conditions, none of them automatically means that a person has heart disease. Many can also result from anxiety, reflux, lung conditions, sleep disorders, medications, or other health problems.

Still, recognizing potentially serious symptoms is important.

1. Waking Up Suddenly Short of Breath

One of the more concerning nighttime symptoms is waking up feeling as though you cannot get enough air.

Some people describe suddenly sitting upright or opening a window because breathing feels difficult.

A condition called paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea can occur in people with heart failure. Fluid can accumulate when a person lies down, increasing pressure in the lungs and making breathing more difficult.

However, nighttime breathlessness can also be caused by:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic lung disease
  • Sleep apnea
  • Panic attacks
  • Acid reflux
  • Other respiratory conditions

If you repeatedly wake up gasping for air, don't simply assume it's anxiety or poor sleep.

Talk with a healthcare professional.

Severe or rapidly worsening breathing difficulty requires urgent medical attention.

2. Needing Several Pillows to Sleep Comfortably

Some people with heart failure find that breathing becomes more comfortable when they sleep with their upper body elevated.

This symptom is known as orthopnea—shortness of breath that occurs when lying flat and improves when sitting or standing.

A person might notice that they previously slept comfortably with one pillow but gradually begins using two, three, or more pillows because lying flat makes breathing difficult.

This can happen because lying down redistributes fluid within the body, increasing the workload on the heart and potentially contributing to congestion in the lungs.

But sleeping with multiple pillows doesn't automatically mean you have heart failure.
