Are Lower Back Dimples Genetic?

The short answer is yes.

Genetics play the biggest role in determining whether someone has these dimples. If one or both parents possess them, the likelihood of their children having them increases.

Researchers believe the dimples result from inherited anatomical variations involving bone structure, ligament placement, and skin attachment. Since these factors are largely determined before birth, there is very little a person can do to create or eliminate them naturally.

This explains why some individuals remain unable to develop visible dimples despite intense exercise programs, while others maintain them regardless of changes in weight.

Simply put, these dimples are one of many inherited physical traits, much like eye color, hair texture, or facial features.

Can Exercise Create Dimples of Venus?

One of the most common misconceptions is that specific workouts can create these lower-back indentations.

In reality, exercise cannot directly create Dimples of Venus if the underlying anatomical structures are not already present.

However, body composition can influence how visible they appear.

Individuals with lower body fat percentages may notice their dimples more clearly because there is less tissue covering the underlying structures. Similarly, strengthening the muscles surrounding the lower back and pelvis may enhance overall definition in that area.

Exercises commonly associated with improving lower-back appearance include:

  • Deadlifts
  • Squats
  • Glute bridges
  • Lunges
  • Core strengthening exercises
  • Romanian deadlifts

These exercises may improve muscle tone and posture, but they do not create the anatomical ligament attachments responsible for true Dimples of Venus.
