Although visible veins are often harmless, there are situations in which changes in the veins deserve closer attention.

One common example is varicose veins. These are enlarged, twisted veins that most often develop in the legs. They occur when valves inside the veins do not function efficiently, allowing blood to pool rather than moving smoothly back toward the heart.

Varicose veins can appear blue, purple, or skin-colored and may become raised or twisted beneath the skin.

Some people experience symptoms such as aching, heaviness, throbbing, itching, or swelling in the legs, particularly after standing for long periods.

Another condition involves spider veins, which are smaller networks of red, purple, or blue blood vessels visible near the surface of the skin. These are usually harmless, although some people choose to have them treated for cosmetic reasons.

The important distinction is that a vein becoming visible is not necessarily the same as a vein becoming abnormal.

A healthy superficial vein can be clearly visible without causing any problems.

However, if a vein suddenly becomes enlarged or is accompanied by pain, swelling, redness, warmth, or tenderness, it should not simply be dismissed as normal vascularity.

This is especially important when symptoms appear in only one limb.

For example, sudden swelling and pain in one leg can have several possible causes, including conditions involving a deeper vein. Such symptoms warrant prompt medical evaluation rather than waiting to see whether they disappear on their own.
