If you know what this is, you had a very wild chilhood

It is the cocoon of a caterpillar, commonly found on custard apple or star fruit trees. These cocoons were used by many people in rural Vietnam as childhood toys. Some people cut off the ends of the cocoons to get the worm inside to use as bait for fishing or to feed birds. They are even used as trumpets, making pleasant sounds.

Characteristics:

This is the cocoon of a type of caterpillar, usually clinging to custard apple trees, grapefruit trees or some other fruit trees.

Cocoons are created from silk of caterpillars to protect them during the pupal stage.

The shape of the cocoon is usually elongated, gray or brown, often mixed with the color of tree bark or dry leaves.

Uses in childhood:

The cocoon is a familiar toy for children in many rural areas of Vietnam, reminiscent of a "fierce" childhood.

Children often cut off both ends of the cocoon to get the worm inside to use as bait for fishing or as food for birds.

Another popular way to play is to make a trumpet. Children will cut off one end of the cocoon, then blow air into it to create a sound.
