The human body relies on a complex network of blood vessels and lymphatic channels to move fluids efficiently. When that system becomes disrupted, swelling can occur.

One common cause is poor circulation. As people age, blood vessels may become less efficient at returning blood from the legs back to the heart. This can result in fluid accumulation around the ankles and feet.

Kidney-related conditions may also contribute to swelling because the kidneys help regulate fluid balance. When kidney function is impaired, excess fluid may remain in the body. Similarly, liver disorders can affect protein levels that help keep fluid inside blood vessels.

Heart-related conditions can sometimes lead to fluid retention as well. When the heart is less effective at pumping blood, fluid may collect in the lower extremities. In these cases, swelling may be accompanied by fatigue or shortness of breath.

In addition, certain medications—including some blood pressure medicines, anti-inflammatory drugs, and hormone therapies—can cause swelling as a side effect.

Pregnancy, obesity, injuries, infections, and prolonged sitting are other factors that may contribute to swollen legs. Because many different conditions can produce similar symptoms, professional evaluation is often necessary when swelling becomes persistent.
