Massive Python With a Swollen Belly Found Under a Family’s Shed — What Could Have Caused It?
A startling image showing a large python with an unusually swollen abdomen has been circulating online, accompanied by a dramatic claim that an X-ray revealed the snake’s “shocking last meal.”
The photograph is certainly striking. The snake appears to have a dramatically enlarged section of its body, while an inset image appears to show an X-ray of a large object inside the animal.
But before jumping to conclusions, there is an important question to consider:
What could actually cause a python to develop such a dramatically swollen belly?
Large snakes can consume surprisingly large prey, and their bodies are specially adapted to handle meals that would be impossible for most other animals to swallow. At the same time, abdominal swelling in a snake can have several possible explanations, and a photograph alone cannot establish exactly what happened.
Pythons Are Built to Eat Large Meals
Pythons are powerful constrictor snakes that feed primarily on animals they can overpower and swallow whole.
Depending on the species and size of the snake, prey can include rodents, birds, rabbits, pigs, deer, and other animals. Some of the largest python species are capable of consuming prey that appears enormous compared with the snake's head.
One reason this is possible is that snakes do not have jaws that function like those of humans.
Their lower jaws are not rigidly fused together at the front in the same way as ours. Instead, the two sides are connected by flexible tissue, allowing the mouth to expand considerably. Numerous ligaments and movable bones help the snake accommodate prey that is much wider than its head.
The snake's body is equally remarkable.
Its ribs and skin can expand, allowing the animal to accommodate a large meal inside its digestive tract.
This is why a python can look dramatically different before and after feeding.
