Just One Lemon Can Make Your Microwave Sparkling Clean
No Need for Complications, One Lemon Is All You Need to Clean Your Microwave
The microwave is an essential appliance in any modern kitchen, but cleaning it can be challenging due to stubborn stains. However, with just 5 minutes and a few lemon slices, you can easily clean your microwave without using any harsh chemicals.
Lemons are a natural cleaning agent known for their acidic properties. When heated in the microwave, they release acidic steam that softens and breaks down tough food residues clinging to the interior surfaces. This not only makes wiping effortless but also leaves behind a fresh and pleasant citrus scent.
Sabrina Fierman, an employee at New York-based cleaning company Little Elves, confirms that steam cleaning is a fantastic method for microwaves as it eliminates the need for chemicals. This approach not only protects your health but is also eco-friendly. Using lemons makes the cleaning process even simpler and more effective.
How to Clean Your Microwave with Lemon
What You’ll Need:
- A microwave-safe bowl
- A few lemon slices or lemon juice
- A cotton cloth or paper towel
- Baking soda (optional, for stubborn stains)
Steps:
- Pour at least one cup of water into the microwave-safe bowl. Add a few lemon slices or 2-3 tablespoons of lemon juice.
- Place the bowl in the microwave and heat it on high for 5 minutes. Let it sit inside for another 15 minutes without opening the door.
- Carefully remove the bowl (it will be hot but safe to handle) and use a cloth or paper towel to wipe all surfaces inside the microwave, including the door and its gasket.
For grease stains that are hard to remove, add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to the lemon solution for extra cleaning power. The turntable plate can be washed as usual or placed in the dishwasher.
Cleaning expert Sabrina Fierman also recommends cleaning your microwave weekly or more frequently if needed. To minimize cleanup, always cover food with a microwave-safe lid when reheating.
Both lemons and vinegar are excellent cleaning agents, but lemons are often preferred for their pleasant fragrance. This method is simple, convenient, and safe, making it ideal for appliances that heat food.
Cleaning your microwave doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With this easy lemon trick, you’ll save time while keeping your kitchen fresh and spotless.
