Kidney stones develop when urine contains high concentrations of substances capable of forming crystals. Several factors can increase this risk.

Dehydration is one of the most important contributors. When a person does not drink enough fluid, urine becomes more concentrated. Higher concentrations of certain minerals can make crystal formation more likely.

Diet can also influence stone formation. Depending on the type of stone, high intake of sodium, certain animal proteins, or other dietary factors may contribute to risk. Importantly, prevention is not simply about avoiding calcium-containing foods. In fact, adequate dietary calcium can be beneficial for preventing certain calcium oxalate stones.

Family history can play a role as well. Someone whose close relatives have experienced kidney stones may have a higher risk.

Certain medical conditions and medications can also increase the likelihood of developing stones. Previous kidney stones are another important risk factor because people who have already formed one stone may develop another in the future.

Body weight and metabolic health can also influence risk.

This is why there is no single explanation for every kidney stone case. Two people may develop stones for completely different reasons.

After a stone has been removed or passed, doctors may sometimes analyze the stone itself. Laboratory analysis can reveal what it is made of, providing valuable information for future prevention.

Urine and blood tests may also help identify factors that contribute to stone formation.

For someone who repeatedly develops kidney stones, understanding the underlying cause can be more useful than simply treating each painful episode individually.

Prevention should therefore be personalized whenever possible.
