Married Before Love

Married before love is not about learning to love a stranger.

Chapter 1: A Marriage Without Love

The day Clara Bennett signed the marriage certificate with Alexander Reed, she did not feel as though she was entering a marriage.

She felt as though she was selling one part of her life to save the rest.

The bookstore Bennett & Daughter had existed for nearly seventy years. It was where her father used to read stories to her every night, where her mother left little handwritten notes inside old novels.

But after her father died, debts piled up. The bank gave her thirty days to pay everything back.

On the twenty-seventh day, Alexander appeared.

He sat across from her in a quiet café, wearing a black coat, his expression calm as if they were discussing the weather.

Alexander: “I’ll pay all of your family’s debts.”

Clara tightened her fingers around her teacup.

Clara: “And in return, one year of marriage.”

Alexander: “Yes.”

Clara: “Why don’t you find a woman who loves you?”

Alexander was silent for a few seconds before answering.

Alexander: “Because I don’t need love.”

The words made Clara look at him more carefully.

He did not sound arrogant.

He did not sound cold.

He sounded like a man who had once been disappointed by love so deeply that he no longer believed in it.

Chapter 2: Two Strangers Under One Roof

Alexander’s penthouse was so large that Clara could hear her own footsteps echoing through the hallway.

They slept in separate rooms.

Ate at opposite ends of the table.

Spoke like business partners.

Every morning, Alexander left a cup of coffee outside her door.

No note.

No knock.

Just coffee.

A week later, Clara asked him:

Clara: “How did you know I drink coffee without sugar?”

Alexander was buttoning his shirt.

Alexander: “I read your file.”

Clara laughed softly.

Clara: “You read my file to find out how I take my coffee?”

He paused.

Alexander: “I don’t like living with a complete stranger.”

For the first time, Clara realized that behind his perfect composure was a very deep loneliness.

Chapter 3: Alexander’s Wound

One night, Clara passed by his study and saw the light still on.

Alexander was sitting in front of an old photograph.

In it, a young woman was holding a boy of about ten.

Clara asked gently:

Clara: “Your mother?”

Alexander did not look surprised.

He nodded.

Alexander: “She left when I was twelve.”

Clara froze.

Alexander: “She said she couldn’t continue living in a marriage without love.”

He gave a bitter smile.

Alexander: “That’s when I learned that love is the thing that makes people leave.”

The room fell silent.

Clara looked at the man who always seemed to control everything.

For the first time, she did not see strength.

She saw a little boy who had never been chosen to stay.

Chapter 4: When She Began to Care

Clara became seriously ill one rainy night.

She woke at three in the morning and found Alexander changing the cold towel on her forehead.

He had missed the most important meeting of the month.

Clara: “You didn’t have to do this.”

Alexander avoided her eyes.

Alexander: “I’m not good at taking care of people.”

Clara: “Then why are you still here?”

He stopped for a moment.

Very quietly, he answered:

Alexander: “Because I don’t want you to be alone.”

Clara felt a sharp ache in her chest.

Not because it was romantic.

But because she understood that someone who had once been abandoned would fear most the idea of leaving another person alone.

Chapter 5: What She Never Knew

One afternoon, Clara went to his company to bring him some documents.

By accident, she overheard a conversation between Alexander and his lawyer.

Lawyer: “If you don’t get married before your thirty-second birthday, control of the company will go to your uncle.”

Alexander: “I know.”

Lawyer: “You could have married anyone. Why Clara?”

A long silence followed.

Then Alexander said:

Alexander: “Because she would never love me for my money.”

Clara stood frozen outside the door.

For the first time, she understood that he had not chosen her because she was convenient.

He had chosen her because he was afraid of being loved for the wrong reason.

Chapter 6: The Moment Everything Changed

They began eating dinner together.

Watching movies together.

Arguing about small things.

One evening Clara burned dinner.

She panicked.

Alexander looked at the blackened pan and suddenly laughed.

A real laugh.

The sound made Clara stare at him.

Clara: “So you do know how to laugh.”

Alexander: “Apparently.”

That night, while they washed the dishes side by side, Clara realized something that frightened her.

She was happy.

Not the overwhelming kind of happiness.

But a warm, quiet happiness that slipped into her life little by little.

And that was what scared her most.

Chapter 7: The Divorce Papers

One month before their agreement ended, Clara found divorce papers already signed.

Alexander’s name was written neatly at the bottom.

Her hands trembled as she held them.

That night she confronted him.

Clara: “You wanted this to end that badly?”

Alexander looked at her for a long moment.

Alexander: “I wanted you to be free.”

Clara: “What about you?”

He said nothing.

That silence hurt more than any answer.

Because Clara understood the truth:

He had fallen in love with her, but he still believed he did not deserve to ask her to stay.

Chapter 8: The Rain

The next morning, Clara left.

Not to leave him forever.

But to discover what her heart truly wanted.

The rain came down hard.

Her phone kept vibrating.

Alexander Calling.

She did not answer.

When she stepped out of the subway station, she saw him.

No umbrella.

No coat.

Completely drenched.

He ran toward her, breathing hard.

Alexander: “I’ve been looking for you everywhere.”

Clara: “Why?”

He looked at her, his eyes red from the rain—or perhaps from something else.

Alexander: “Because I was afraid.”

Clara: “Afraid of what?”

For the first time in his life, Alexander Reed let all of his weakness show.

Alexander: “Afraid you would leave me the way my mother did.”

Clara went completely still.

He lowered his head, his voice rough.

Alexander: “I thought that if I never loved anyone, no one could leave me.”

Then he looked up.

Alexander: “And then you appeared.”

Tears mixed with the rain on Clara’s face.

Alexander: “I didn’t know what love was until I started worrying about every meal you skipped, every fever you had, every time you went quiet.”

He stepped closer.

Alexander: “I don’t want you to stay because of a contract.”

A breath passed between them.

Alexander: “I want you to stay because you choose me.”

Chapter 9: Her Answer

Clara looked at the man standing before her.

No longer the cold, untouchable businessman.

But a wounded human being, trembling with the fear of being abandoned.

She touched his face gently.

Clara: “Do you know the saddest thing?”

Alexander shook his head slightly.

Clara: “I thought I married you to save a bookstore.”

A tear escaped as she smiled.

Clara: “But in the end, we saved each other.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

For the first time in many years, he no longer felt that he had to be strong.

Clara wrapped her arms around him in the middle of the rain.

Not out of pity.

Not out of gratitude.

But because she had fallen in love with the real man standing in front of her.

Chapter 10: The Second Wedding

Six months later, they held a real wedding inside Clara’s old bookstore.

Among shelves of books and warm golden lights.

No luxury.

No spectacle.

When the officiant asked:

“Alexander Reed, do you willingly take Clara Bennett as your wife?”

Alexander looked at her for a long time before answering.

Alexander: “The first time, I married her because I needed a wife.”

He tightened his fingers around Clara’s hand.

Alexander: “This time, I marry her because she is my home.”

Clara burst into tears.

And for the first time, she understood:

Married before love is not about learning to love a stranger.

It is about learning to see the wounds hidden beneath each other’s walls, and choosing to stay even after seeing everything.
