For a while, things became peaceful.
Ryan started walking Emma home himself whenever he could.
When he couldn't, Travis helped.
But now there was communication.
No secrets.
No interrogation.
No competing.
Then one rainy Thursday afternoon, something unexpected happened.
Emma never arrived home.
The school called.
There had been a mix-up.
She had gone to the library with her teacher for a special reading activity.
By the time Ryan and I learned what happened, twenty minutes had passed.
Ryan panicked.
I panicked.
Travis was already outside.
"I'll check the route from the school."
Ryan looked at him.
Then nodded.
No argument.
No suspicion.
Just trust.
Twenty minutes later, Travis called.
"Found her."
We rushed to the library.
Emma was sitting comfortably with her teacher, completely unaware that three adults had nearly lost their minds.
When she saw us, she blinked.
"Why is everyone running?"
Ryan hugged her.
"I thought something happened."
She laughed.
"I'm fine."
Travis stood behind him.
Ryan looked at Travis.
"Thank you."
Travis nodded.
That moment mattered.
Because Ryan had finally learned the difference between protecting someone and controlling everything around them.
