The Day Fear Turned Eyelashes Into Monsters

The dog, of course, went on to nap like nothing had happened.

That was perhaps the funniest part of the whole thing.

After all the confusion, the strange discovery, the nervous guesses, and the ridiculous amount of time we had spent staring at something that looked far more mysterious than it actually was, our dog simply wandered over to his favorite spot on the rug, circled twice, dropped onto his side, and closed his eyes.

Within minutes, he was asleep.

His breathing became slow and steady. Every once in a while, one of his paws twitched as though he were chasing something in a dream. His ears moved at the faintest sounds from the kitchen, but otherwise, he seemed completely unconcerned with the events of the evening.

He had no idea that he had just inspired what felt like an entire evening of detective work.

He had no idea that for a few minutes, my girlfriend and I had been genuinely worried about what we had found attached to his fur.

And he certainly had no idea that the mysterious object that had caused all of our confusion was nothing dangerous at all.

They were just soggy false eyelashes.

Plastic eyelashes.

A pair of cheap, decorative eyelashes that had somehow managed to become tangled in the dog's fur during his walk.

That was it.

No parasite.

No strange animal.

No dangerous growth.

No mysterious creature hiding in the bushes.

Just eyelashes.

Yet, when we first saw them, our minds had immediately gone somewhere else.

That is the strange thing about fear. It doesn't always need a serious reason to appear. Sometimes all it needs is a little uncertainty.

We had been outside for an ordinary walk. Nothing unusual had happened. The dog had sniffed every tree, investigated every patch of grass, stopped more times than I could count, and generally behaved like a dog who believed the entire neighborhood had been created specifically for his personal inspection.

My girlfriend walked beside him, occasionally tugging gently on the leash when he became too interested in something.

It was a completely normal evening.

The kind of evening that usually disappears from your memory almost immediately.

But then we came home.

And we noticed something attached to his fur.

At first, neither of us could quite understand what we were looking at.

It was dark.

It was wet.

It was tangled.

And because it was stuck among the strands of his fur, its original shape was difficult to recognize.

My girlfriend noticed it first.

She stopped and looked down at the dog.

“Wait.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

She pointed toward his side.

“What's that?”

I leaned closer.

The dog looked back at me with the calm, slightly confused expression that dogs seem to have whenever humans suddenly become interested in something completely irrelevant.

I crouched down.

At first, I thought it was a piece of wet grass.

Maybe a leaf.

Maybe some kind of seed or plant material that had caught onto his fur.

Nothing unusual.

Dogs bring things home all the time.

A leaf gets caught in their tail.

A twig gets tangled around a leg.

Grass sticks to their belly.

Sometimes they return from a walk carrying half the park with them.

So I reached toward it.

Then I stopped.

There was something about the shape that made me hesitate.

It didn't look quite like grass.

It was curved.

There were tiny strands sticking out from it.

And because it was wet, everything seemed to have clumped together.

My girlfriend crouched beside me.

“Do you know what that is?”

“No.”

“Is it alive?”

That question changed the atmosphere immediately.

Neither of us said anything for a second.

We looked at the object.

Then at the dog.

Then back at the object.

The dog wagged his tail.

That was not particularly helpful.

We tried to get a better look.

The more we examined it, the stranger it seemed.

It had the appearance of something organic, but there was also something artificial about it. The little strands were too uniform to look like ordinary fur. The curved piece seemed too structured to be a random plant.
