I stepped outside before Tony could get into his car.

"Tony?"

He turned so quickly that I knew he hadn't expected me to come out.

"What?"

I pointed toward his pocket.

"What did Dakota give you?"

He glanced down.

"Nothing important."

I stared at him.

"Nothing important? I watched you read it. You looked like someone had just delivered terrible news."

He forced a small smile.

"Jennifer, it's fine. I just need to get to work."

He reached for the car door.

I didn't move.

"Then show me the note."

For a moment, he seemed unsure how to respond. His eyes moved from me to the road and then back again.

Finally, he sighed.

"Can we talk about this later?"

"Why later?"

"Because I'm already late."

"Tony, you can be five minutes later. I want to know why our neighbor is secretly passing you notes."

He rubbed his forehead.

"Please don't turn this into something it isn't."

That sentence made me even more uncomfortable.

I wasn't accusing him of having an affair. I was asking a simple question.

But he was responding as though I had discovered something far more serious.

After a long silence, he reached into his pocket and handed me the folded paper.

"Read it."

I unfolded it carefully.

The handwriting was neat and deliberate.

The message was short:

Tony, I think it's time you told Jennifer what happened the night you helped me after I moved in. I've tried to handle this privately, but I can't keep pretending everything is fine. Please call me today so we can decide how to explain the situation honestly.

I read it once.

Then again.

The words seemed to become heavier with every second.

"What happened the night you helped her?"

Tony looked down.

"Jennifer..."

"What night?"

He took a slow breath.

"A few weeks ago, Dakota called me. She was frightened because she thought someone had been trying to get into her garage."

I folded the note.

"And you went over there?"

"Yes."

"Without telling me?"

"I didn't think it was a big deal."

I looked at him carefully.

"Why would she need you to help her with something like that?"

"She was alone. She said she'd heard noises near the garage and noticed that one of the side doors wasn't properly secured. I went over to check it."

"And what happened?"

"Nothing. We checked the doors, looked around the property, and made sure everything was locked."

"How long were you there?"

"Maybe half an hour."

I tried to keep my voice calm.

"Then why does she say you need to explain the situation honestly?"

Tony hesitated.

That hesitation was more disturbing than anything he had said so far.

"She told me she'd been having problems with someone she used to know," he finally explained. "Someone who had apparently been contacting her after she moved."

"Who?"

"She didn't give me many details."

"Did she say this person was dangerous?"

"She was worried about it, yes."

I looked at the note again.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Tony looked genuinely uncomfortable.

"Because I didn't want you worrying about something that might turn out to be nothing."

"That isn't your decision to make for both of us."

"I know."

"Do you?"

He didn't answer.

I felt hurt, but I also knew that jumping to conclusions would not help. I needed to understand exactly what had happened.

"Did she ask you to keep it secret?"

"No. I just didn't mention it."

"Did you promise her anything?"

"I told her that if she felt unsafe, I could help her find the right people to contact. I didn't promise anything beyond that."

I studied his face.

"Then why is she asking you to call her?"

Tony looked toward the house across the street.

"She received some new information. She said she wanted to discuss it with me because I was there when the first incident happened."

"New information about the person who frightened her?"

He nodded.

I felt a strange mixture of relief and frustration.

If Tony had simply told me about the incident when it happened, none of this would have been necessary.

Instead, a secret had grown around an ordinary act of kindness.

"Let's go over there," I said.

Tony looked surprised.

"Now?"

"Yes. If there's something we need to understand, I'd rather hear it directly."

He hesitated again.

Then he nodded.

We crossed the street together.

Dakota opened the door after the second knock. Her expression changed when she saw both of us standing there.

"Jennifer. Tony."

I held up the note.

"I think we need to talk."

For a moment, she didn't move.

Then she stepped aside.

"Please come in."

Her living room was neat and sparsely furnished. A few moving boxes still stood near the hallway, and a half-finished cup of tea sat on the coffee table.

Dakota sat down and clasped her hands.

"I'm sorry," she began.

I remained standing.

"Before you apologize, I'd like to understand what happened."

She looked at Tony.

He gave her a small nod.

Then she turned back to me.

"It started shortly after I moved in. Someone from my past began contacting me. At first, it was just messages. Then I noticed things around my house that made me uncomfortable."

"What sort of things?" I asked.

She looked down.

"I'd rather not go into every detail right now. But one night, I heard someone near the garage. I was frightened, and Tony happened to be outside when I called for help."

I glanced at my husband.

"Why did you call him instead of the police?"

"I wasn't sure whether I was overreacting," Dakota said. "I thought I heard something, but I didn't know if anyone had actually entered the property."

She paused.

"Tony helped me check the doors. He also told me that if I felt threatened again, I should contact the authorities instead of trying to handle it alone."

That explanation made sense.

But the note still contained one troubling phrase.

I can't keep pretending everything is fine.

I looked directly at her.

"What does that mean?"

Dakota took a deep breath.

And then she explained something neither Tony nor I had expected.
