What to ask your doctor before a colonoscopy: The most important question
The quiet farmland of Northern Vermont held a heartbreaking secret inside a weathered barn. Dozens of huskies had been living in conditions that were far from safe or humane. Nearly 60 dogs, including young puppies, were found crowded into dirty kennels or tied to chains that limited their movement. The air inside the barn was thick with the smell of ammonia from waste that had built up over time. Many of the dogs looked thin and exhausted, and some appeared dehydrated. When rescuers finally stepped onto the property, it was clear these animals had been waiting a long time for someone to notice their suffering and step in to help.

Authorities with the Lamoille County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the ASPCA, which quickly deployed to the scene. Their mission was urgent. The dogs needed immediate rescue and medical attention.
Investigators found many of the dogs chained with little room to move. Others were kept in kennels soaked with urine. The barn carried a heavy ammonia smell that made the environment unsafe for both animals and people.
Some of the huskies appeared thin and weak. Several showed clear signs of dehydration. Rescuers also noted that no food or water appeared to be available when they arrived.
For animals that thrive on exercise, companionship, and cold outdoor environments, the confinement and neglect had taken a serious toll.
The rescue team carefully removed each dog from the property. Puppies were carried gently to safety while adult dogs were guided away from the only place many of them had ever known.
Once transported to an ASPCA facility, the huskies began receiving comprehensive care. Veterinary teams immediately started forensic medical exams to document their condition and identify any urgent health concerns. Many of the dogs also began behavior assessments to help staff understand their emotional state after living through such hardship.
Despite their difficult past, early observations suggest that many of the dogs are beginning to relax now that they are in a calm and safe environment.

Teresa Ladner, vice president of ASPCA Criminal Practice and Investigations, described the scene as deeply concerning when responders first arrived.
She explained that the conditions made it clear that swift action was necessary to remove the animals and provide them with proper care. The ASPCA worked alongside local authorities to ensure the dogs could be safely relocated and treated.
The organization often assists law enforcement agencies during complex animal cruelty investigations. Their teams provide expertise in veterinary forensics, animal behavior, and large-scale rescue operations.
Lamoille County Sheriff Roger Marcoux also praised the coordinated response. He recognized the dedication of his deputies throughout the investigation and thanked partner agencies that contributed their time and resources.
Several organizations joined the effort to help the animals, including Essex Veterinary Center, the Humane Society of Chittenden County, North Country Animal League, Sequist Animal Hospital, Lamoille Valley Veterinary Services, and Vermonters Against Animal Cruelty and Abandonment. The Vermont Division of Animal Welfare and the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department also assisted.
Together, these groups ensured the huskies could receive immediate support after leaving the barn.
For many of the dogs, this rescue marks the beginning of a completely different life. Medical teams are now monitoring their health, providing treatment, and helping them recover physically and emotionally.
Some of the huskies are still cautious around people. Others have already started showing gentle curiosity and moments of trust. Staff members say it is common for rescued animals to slowly reveal their true personalities once they begin to feel safe.
Each day away from the barn allows the dogs to regain strength and comfort. With proper nutrition, medical attention, and patient care, they now have the opportunity to heal from what they endured.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the situation remains active. Authorities continue to review evidence collected during the rescue. Animal cruelty charges are expected as the case moves forward.
For the Huskies, the most important change has already happened. The chains, the crowded kennels, and the suffocating barn are now behind them. In their place is the possibility of recovery, safety, and a future filled with compassion.
