The autumn rain fell quietly over the small house on the outskirts of Seattle. Water slid down the old windows while the wind carried the smell of wet leaves through the narrow street. Inside the living room, a letter was thrown onto the table so hard that the cups rattled.

Lina stood up, her hands shaking with anger and disappointment. The acceptance letter from a university in London lay open between her and her older sister.

Lina: “You always say no! I got the scholarship, Anna!”

Anna was still wearing the restaurant uniform she had not even had time to change out of. Her face looked exhausted, but she picked up the letter carefully as if it were something precious.

Anna: “The scholarship only covers tuition. You still need money for rent, food, insurance, and the flight.”

Lina: “I can get a part-time job!”

Anna: “You’ve never lived alone.”

She had been accepted to college that same week, but she never went. She took a job instead.

She remembered being fed, taken to school, and hugged when she had nightmares.
