From Rejection to Belonging: The Inspiring Story of Punch, the Baby Monkey
Rejected by His Mother, Embraced by His Troop: Punch the Baby Monkey’s Remarkable Tale
A routine drive along the highway took an unexpected turn when Tessa Lane noticed something unusual resting near the edge of the road. From a distance, the object looked like nothing more than a pile of discarded trash that someone had carelessly left behind. Still, something about it made Lane slow down and look again. As she passed by and viewed it from a different angle, a small movement caught her attention. What she first believed was garbage suddenly revealed itself to be something heartbreaking. Lying there in the rain, barely moving and surrounded by speeding traffic, was a frightened puppy trying to survive unnoticed.

“It wasn’t until I was at a specific angle and I could see her one ear pop up that I realized it was a living and very scared puppy,” Lane told The Dodo.
The young dog lay trembling near the road as rain poured down. Traffic rushed past at high speed. The puppy pressed herself close to the ground, trying to stay invisible in a place that offered no safety.
Lane knew she could not simply drive away.
She quickly turned her car around and pulled over nearby. The situation was dangerous. Cars were speeding past, and the wet road made everything more unpredictable. But the thought of leaving the frightened dog there felt impossible.
“The possibility of someone hydroplaning and losing control or of Lucky darting into the road was truly frightening, and the potential consequences weighed heavily on my mind,” Lane said. “My thoughts were racing, but above all, my main focus was to get that sweet girl to safety.”
As Lane stepped out and carefully approached, the puppy’s fear became clear. The little dog darted away and hid underneath Lane’s car, trembling and unsure who to trust.
Just then, help arrived.
A kind stranger named Misty noticed what was happening and pulled over to assist. Together, the two women worked patiently to reassure the terrified puppy. They spoke softly and moved slowly, trying not to startle her further.
Little by little, their calm voices helped. Eventually, the frightened dog allowed them to guide her out from beneath the car and away from the dangerous roadside.
Finally, the puppy was safe.
Lane decided to take her home and gave her a name that reflected her incredible second chance: Lucky.

At first, Lucky remained extremely cautious. Everything around her was new and unfamiliar. She kept her distance from Lane and watched every movement carefully.
But even in those early hours, small signs of hope began to appear.
Later that same day, Lucky gently took food from Lane’s hand. It was a quiet but meaningful moment. For a dog who had likely been surviving alone and scared, choosing to trust someone, even a little, was a big step.
Soon, more kindness followed.
A local dog groomer named Andrea saw Lane’s rescue video and offered to help by giving Lucky a bath and haircut. The grooming session removed the dirt and tangles that had built up during her time on the streets.
Afterward, Lucky seemed lighter. Cleaner. More comfortable in her own skin.
With each passing day, she began to relax more in her new environment. Her eyes softened. Her body language changed. The scared puppy who once hid under a car slowly started to feel safe.
“It’s clear that earning her trust will take time, but I’m confident she will eventually understand that she is safe with us and that we would never hurt her,” Lane said.
For Lane, the experience also changed her perspective. She now encourages others to help animals in distress whenever possible. Stray animals cannot ask for help or explain their fear. They rely entirely on compassionate people willing to stop and care.
“They don’t have the words to ask for assistance or the understanding of where to go for safety,” Lane said.
Lucky was fortunate that someone chose to stop that rainy day.
What began as a roadside rescue soon became something much deeper. As Lucky continued to open her heart, Lane realized she could not imagine sending the dog anywhere else.
Their connection had grown too strong.
“I genuinely believe that Lucky and I formed a special bond the day I rescued her,” Lane said.

After everything they had been through together, Lane made the decision official. Lucky was no longer just a rescue.
She was family.
Today, the once frightened puppy who hid beside a busy highway now has a safe home, a loving owner, and a future filled with comfort and care. What started as a moment of compassion on a rainy road turned into a lifelong friendship.
