The cervix is the lower part of the uterus. It opens when a woman gives birth through a process of softening and shortening called cervical dilation, commonly referred to as labor. During this process, the cervix widens to allow the baby to pass through the vaginal canal. The maximum dilation of the cervix is approximately 10 cm, enabling a smoother delivery.

Recently, an illustration of this process has gone viral on social media. Specifically, the image shows a wooden board with six circular cutouts engraved on it. Each circle is labeled with its diameter, with the largest being 10 cm. This circle is notably large and comparable to the size of a baby's head during delivery.

The 10 cm dilation is the point at which the cervix is fully opened, and doctors and nurses encourage the mother to begin pushing during labor. Additionally, 10 cm is just the starting measurement for pushing and not the final size. The cervix may continue to stretch further to accommodate the baby's head.

Many mothers, after seeing this image, were both astonished and deeply moved—both haunted and amazed by its significance. It highlighted the immense effort and sacrifice mothers endure to welcome their babies into the world, braving physical and emotional changes. Yet, the sweetest reward is the moment when both mother and child are safe and healthy.

Comments under the image reflected a mix of awe and empathy:

Thinking back to my labor experience still gives me chills. It was truly painful. While waiting to deliver naturally, I just wanted to switch to a C-section because it hurt so much.
I can’t believe the cervix dilates this much—absolutely terrifying.
I don’t know what drove me to go through childbirth four times, moms!
Looking at this makes me feel for all the mothers and wives out there. It’s truly miraculous. We must appreciate this sacrifice.
Such comments underscore the incredible resilience and love of mothers.
