I had always believed that treating your parents-in-law with love and respect was part of being a good husband and a responsible member of the family.

For nearly eight years, my mother-in-law lived under the same roof as my wife and me. I never considered her a burden. I helped provide for her, took care of her daily needs, and treated her much like my own mother.

So when I discovered that she had received more than $200,000 in land compensation and given every penny of it to my brother-in-law, I was completely stunned.

What hurt even more was that she had made the decision without discussing it with us.

At first, I tried to convince myself that perhaps she had her reasons. After all, it was her money, and ultimately she had the right to decide what to do with it.

But after everything my wife and I had done for her over the years, hearing her explanation left me feeling as though all those years of care had meant nothing.

And eventually, my wife and I made a decision that changed the entire family.

I Never Expected This From My Mother-in-Law

My name is Jack, and I am 53 years old.

Most of my relatives and friends would probably describe me as a responsible person. I have always believed that family members should help one another, particularly when someone becomes elderly and needs support.

About eight years ago, my mother-in-law found herself in a difficult situation.

She had previously been living with my eldest brother-in-law and his wife. According to what we knew, they eventually became unhappy about having her in their home.

The relationship deteriorated, and eventually, they no longer wanted her living with them.

My wife and I felt sorry for her.

We couldn't simply stand by and watch her struggle, so we invited her to live with us.

At the time, I never imagined that this decision would eventually become such a painful family conflict.

I simply thought I was doing what any decent son-in-law should do.

For Eight Years, We Treated Her Like Our Own Mother

When my mother-in-law moved into our home, we never set a deadline for how long she could stay.

We didn't tell her that she needed to contribute financially.

We didn't make her feel like a guest.

She became part of our household.

She was actually quite kind and helpful around the house. She would often assist with small household chores and sometimes use her monthly pension to buy groceries.

She received roughly $700 a month in pension payments, and she would sometimes use that money to purchase things like cooking oil, soy sauce, salt and other household necessities.

I appreciated those gestures.

Even though we were financially better off than she was, I never expected her to pay us for taking care of her.

My wife and I both worked, and we were able to support the household.

Whenever her clothes needed replacing, my wife would buy them.

When we traveled, we often took her with us.

If she became sick, we were the ones who took her to appointments and paid for what she needed.

I genuinely believed that we would continue caring for her for the rest of her life.

I never expected anything in return.

Then the Land Compensation Arrived

Everything changed after her village became part of a development project.

My mother-in-law owned land there, and as a result, she received compensation of more than $200,000.

It was a huge amount of money compared with anything our family had previously dealt with.

When she received the compensation, she told us that she had deposited the money in a bank.

She didn't explain what she planned to do with it.

At the time, neither my wife nor I questioned her.

We assumed that she would eventually discuss the matter with her children.

Perhaps she would divide some of it among her children.

Perhaps she would save most of it for her later years.

Perhaps she would use some of it to help our household, considering that she had been living with us for so many years.

We didn't know.

But we never imagined what actually happened.

We Learned the Truth From My Brother-in-Law

My brother-in-law apparently received the entire amount.

Not half.

Not a portion.

All of it.

And the strangest part was that my mother-in-law had apparently made the decision without telling my wife or me.

We might never have known if my brother-in-law hadn't started talking about the money openly.

When I learned what had happened, I was shocked.

I tried to remain calm.

I reminded myself that the money legally belonged to my mother-in-law and that she had the right to make her own financial decisions.

But emotionally, it was difficult to accept.

For eight years, we had provided her with a home and supported her daily life.

Meanwhile, my brother-in-law had played almost no role in caring for her during those years.

Yet he had received the entire compensation payment.

Eventually, I could no longer keep my feelings to myself.

I asked my mother-in-law directly.

“Why Did You Give Everything to Him?”

I said:

“Mom, can you explain what happened? You've been living with us for so many years. Why did you give all the money to him without telling us? Didn't you think about us at all?”

I wasn't demanding that she give me money simply because I was her son-in-law.

What hurt me was the feeling that our years of support had been completely disregarded.

My mother-in-law remained calm.

Then she explained her reasoning.

She said that my wife and I both had stable jobs and relatively good incomes.

She believed that we would eventually retire and have pensions of our own.

My brother-in-law, on the other hand, did not have a stable career.

According to her, he and his wife struggled financially, and she was worried about what would happen to him in the future.

She said she wanted to help him because she was afraid he would suffer.

Then she said something that hurt my wife deeply.

She told us that because my wife had married me and moved her household registration to my family, she no longer considered her daughter part of her original household in the same way.

Therefore, in her mind, the compensation money should naturally go to her son.

I was speechless.

Her Explanation Was Difficult to Accept

I understood that parents sometimes worry about their children differently.

Perhaps she genuinely believed that her eldest son needed the money more.

But I couldn't help thinking about everything that had happened before.

My brother-in-law was not helpless.

He was an adult man.

If his career was unstable, that didn't automatically mean my wife and I should be expected to support him indefinitely.

Our current financial situation was not simply the result of luck.

My wife and I had worked for years to build our life.

We had bills, responsibilities and plans for our own future.

Yet my mother-in-law seemed to view our stability as a reason why we deserved less consideration.

That was painful.

I Remembered What Had Happened Years Earlier

What made the situation even more difficult was remembering why my mother-in-law had come to live with us in the first place.

When she lived with my brother-in-law, she had reportedly done a great deal for his household.

She helped with chores.

She worked in the garden.

She helped care for livestock.

She contributed her savings and labor to the family.

But as the years passed, the relationship deteriorated.

Eventually, she was no longer welcome in the home.

When my wife and I took her in, I didn't ask why she had been treated that way.

I simply thought she needed someone.

I remember thinking that she was my wife's mother, and therefore she deserved to be cared for.

For years, I never complained.

I didn't keep a record of every meal we bought or every medical expense we paid.

I never told her, “Remember everything we've done for you.”

I believed family shouldn't work that way.

My Wife Finally Spoke Up

My wife had remained relatively quiet during much of the conversation.

But when her mother explained why she had given everything to her brother, she couldn't hold back anymore.

She told her mother:

“You've always favored my brother.”

She reminded her mother that when her brother no longer wanted her in his house, my wife and I had opened our doors.

She said that she had never demanded money from her mother and had never complained about receiving less.

But after years of taking care of her, she could not understand why her mother suddenly considered her an outsider simply because she was married.
