Chapter 1: What Do Purple Marks on the Legs Mean?
Noticing purple or reddish marks across the legs can be unsettling, especially when the discoloration covers a large area or appears without an obvious injury. The photograph shows extensive mottled coloring, but appearance alone is not enough to identify the cause.
One common explanation is bruising. When small blood vessels beneath the skin break, blood leaks into surrounding tissue and creates purple, blue, or reddish marks. Bruises can occur after a bump or pressure that a person may not remember. They typically change color as the body gradually reabsorbs the blood.
However, not every purple mark is a bruise. Some skin changes are related to blood vessels, temperature, inflammation, medications, or underlying medical conditions. A mottled or net-like pattern can have different explanations depending on whether it disappears when the skin warms, how long it lasts, and whether other symptoms occur.
The headline accompanying the image suggests that the marks are a consequence of sleeping with someone. That claim cannot be confirmed from the photograph. Sharing a bed or sleeping beside another person does not, by itself, explain widespread purple discoloration. Pressure or an accidental impact could cause bruising in some circumstances, but other possibilities should also be considered.
