Put a Cotton Swab in Your Electric Kettle — I Wish I Had Known This Simple Trick Earlier

Electric kettles are one of the most convenient appliances in modern kitchens. With just a few minutes, you can boil water for tea, coffee, or cooking.

However, after using a kettle for some time, many people notice that the kettle sometimes stops heating properly or the power connection becomes unstable. In many cases, the problem is not the kettle itself but dust and dirt stuck in the electrical contact points of the base, which prevents proper electrical conduction.

Fortunately, there is a simple cleaning trick that costs almost nothing and can make your kettle work like new again.

Why Electric Kettles Sometimes Stop Working Properly

When you place the kettle on its base, the metal contacts on the bottom connect with the base to transmit electricity.

Over time, dust, grease, and small debris can accumulate in these narrow grooves and contact points. When this happens, the connection becomes weaker, causing the kettle to heat slowly or stop working intermittently.

Instead of replacing the kettle or sending it for repair, you can solve this issue in just a few minutes.

The Simple Trick: Use a Cotton Swab and a Toothpick

First, prepare a toothpick and a small amount of cotton. If you don’t have loose cotton, you can simply take some from a cotton swab.

Wrap the cotton tightly around the tip of the toothpick. This creates a small cleaning tool that can reach narrow spaces easily.

Next, soak the cotton tip with a little alcohol.

Use it to gently wipe the grooves and contact points on the kettle base.

Why Alcohol Works Better Than Water

It is important not to use water for this step.

Water can cause rust or even damage the electrical contacts. Alcohol, on the other hand, cleans effectively and evaporates quickly, which makes it much safer for electrical components.

As you clean the grooves, you may notice that the cotton tip quickly turns dark or dirty, showing just how much dust and residue had built up there.

Once cleaned, the metal contacts can connect properly again, improving the kettle’s performance.

Don’t Forget the Bottom of the Kettle

Flip the kettle over and check the bottom as well.

You will notice that the bottom also has a groove designed to fit perfectly onto the base. Over time, this area can collect dust and debris too.

Use another clean cotton tip dipped in alcohol and wipe this area thoroughly to ensure the best electrical contact.

Your Kettle Will Work Like New Again

After cleaning both the base and the bottom of the kettle, the appliance can operate smoothly again, just like when it was first purchased.

This quick maintenance trick can save you from unnecessary repairs and extend the lifespan of your kettle.

Sometimes, the simplest household hacks are the most effective.
