Chapter 3: What About Your Heart and Circulation?

Social media posts sometimes make dramatic claims that sleeping on the right side is dangerous for the heart.

For most healthy adults, there is no good evidence that sleeping on the right side is inherently harmful to the heart.

In fact, people naturally move between different sleeping positions throughout the night. Your body does not remain perfectly still for eight hours.

For some individuals with certain heart conditions, however, sleeping position can influence comfort and symptoms. A person may notice that one side feels easier to breathe on or causes less awareness of their heartbeat.

This is highly individual.

Pregnancy is another situation where sleep position deserves special attention. As pregnancy progresses, many healthcare professionals recommend side sleeping, and the left side is often suggested because it may be comfortable and can reduce pressure on major blood vessels. However, pregnant people should follow guidance from their own obstetric provider rather than assuming that one position is universally required.

The bigger point is that sleep quality matters enormously.

If forcing yourself to sleep on a particular side causes shoulder pain, hip pain, repeated awakenings, or poor-quality sleep, the theoretical benefit may not outweigh the practical downside.

A comfortable position that allows you to sleep deeply may be more valuable than obsessing over a specific side.
