Even people who are not art savvy may know Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night because it is so famous. It is easy to see this painting online, but not everyone has the opportunity to see it in real life.

However, recently, people in Ottawa (Canada) seemed to be admiring the real version of the work. That's because in the morning, the sky here suddenly had very strange clouds, looking very similar to the above painting.

According to CBC, these are asperitas clouds, or apocalyptic clouds, which were recently recognized by the International Cloud Atlas in 2017. They look quite dark and scary but are actually not related to the "apocalypse". Meteorologists also do not fully understand the formation of this type of cloud. They only think that asperitas clouds can appear before or after thunderstorms, but sometimes there is no thunderstorm accompanying them.

Meteorologists say that apocalyptic clouds are considered the rarest type of cloud on Earth, so this “might be the first and last time we see them.” In addition, apocalyptic clouds normally look like gray ripples, but this time the clouds are rolling evenly and have a strange light that shines through them, creating an image very similar to Van Gogh’s painting, so it can be said that this is a “once-in-a-lifetime” phenomenon.
