The most important mistake is continuing a household chore after experiencing symptoms that could indicate a serious medical problem.

Sudden dizziness, unusual weakness, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, or a racing or irregular heartbeat should not automatically be attributed to fatigue or aging. These symptoms can have several causes, some of which require urgent treatment.

A particularly important warning sign is fainting or near-fainting. Although some episodes have relatively benign explanations, fainting can also be associated with heart rhythm disturbances, bleeding, dehydration, or other significant conditions.

If an older adult suddenly develops chest pain or pressure, difficulty breathing, new confusion, facial drooping, one-sided weakness, or difficulty speaking, seek emergency medical assistance immediately. These can be signs of a heart attack or stroke.

If someone collapses and does not respond, check whether they are breathing normally and call emergency services. If they are not breathing normally, begin CPR and use an automated external defibrillator if one is available, following the emergency dispatcher's instructions. Do not give food, drinks, or oral medication to someone who is unconscious.

If a person feels faint but remains conscious, help them move to a safe position and prevent a fall. Do not encourage them to keep washing dishes or walk around unnecessarily. Seek urgent medical advice when symptoms are severe, persistent, recurrent, or accompanied by other warning signs.

Medication review is also important. Certain blood pressure medicines, diuretics, sedatives, and other prescriptions can contribute to dizziness or falls in some people. However, medications should never be stopped or adjusted without professional guidance.

Regular medical appointments can help identify conditions that increase the risk of collapse. Blood pressure assessment, medication review, and evaluation of recurring symptoms may reveal problems that can be treated.

Recognizing warning signs early can be far more important than finishing an everyday task.
