He had built schools.

He had paid medical bills.

He had funded food programs.

He had anonymously helped widows and elderly people who had nobody else to turn to.

And the old woman standing in front of Sofia?

She was one of them.

Years earlier, her husband had died unexpectedly, leaving her with enormous medical expenses.

Omar had quietly paid the bills.

But he had never wanted his name mentioned.

Sofia looked at him.

“You never told me.”

Omar shrugged.

“If I helped someone so they would praise me, then I wasn't really helping them.”

Those words completely changed the way Sofia saw him.

But There Was More

The elderly woman invited them inside.

On the wall were photographs of children.

Sofia noticed something strange.

Some of the photographs were of children who looked completely different from one another.

Different families.

Different backgrounds.

Different cities.

The woman explained that Omar had been supporting many of them for years.

Then she handed Sofia another envelope.

Sofia opened it.

Inside was a list.

It contained the names of dozens of families.

Beside each name were notes about medical treatment, school fees, housing assistance, and other expenses.

Sofia's hands began to tremble.

“How much money have you spent doing this?”

Omar looked away.

“It doesn't matter.”

“It matters to me.”

He finally replied:

“Less than what I could have spent on things I don't need.”
