The courtroom became tense when the woman stood and looked across the room at the defendant.

She wasn't there to ask for an apology.

She wanted answers.

For months, she had watched her marriage slowly fall apart. Then she discovered what she believed was the reason: another woman had become involved with her husband.

Now, she was taking that woman to court.

The plaintiff claimed that the defendant had knowingly pursued her husband and contributed to the collapse of their marriage.

The defendant strongly disagreed.

She insisted that the marriage had already been falling apart long before she entered the picture.

“I didn't destroy their marriage,” she said. “Their marriage was already broken.”

The plaintiff shook her head.

“You knew he was married,” she replied.

The courtroom fell silent.

The judge asked both women to explain what had happened.

The plaintiff described the messages she had discovered and the changes she had noticed in her husband.

The defendant told a very different story.

According to her, the husband had told her that his marriage was already over.

“He told me they were separated,” she said.

The plaintiff immediately looked toward the defendant.

“That isn't true.”

The two women continued giving completely different accounts of the same relationship.

Then the plaintiff's attorney presented a series of messages.

The defendant looked at the screen.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

The judge asked her if she recognized the messages.

She slowly nodded.

“Yes.”

The courtroom became even quieter.

But the defendant's attorney wasn't finished.

He produced another set of messages—ones the plaintiff had not mentioned.

They appeared to show conversations between the husband and the plaintiff that took place before the defendant had entered the relationship.

Suddenly, the story became more complicated.
