A strange smile appeared on her face.

It wasn't friendly.

It was confident.

Dangerously confident.

Without hesitation, she said something I still remember word for word.

"You should prepare yourself."

I laughed nervously.

"For what?" I asked.

She looked directly into my eyes.

"For your divorce."

I thought she was joking.

She wasn't.

Then she delivered the sentence that made my stomach drop.

"I'm going to steal your husband."

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Surely nobody would say something like that out loud.

But Vanessa did.

She wasn't embarrassed.

She wasn't apologetic.

In fact, she seemed proud of herself.

The confidence in her voice suggested she believed the outcome was already guaranteed.

She genuinely thought she could walk into another woman's life and take whatever she wanted.

Then she turned around and calmly walked back to her house.

As if she had merely commented on the weather.

Anger, Fear, and Doubt

That evening, I sat alone in the kitchen replaying the conversation over and over again.

Part of me was furious.

Another part was terrified.

What if she succeeded?

What if all those years of marriage suddenly weren't enough?

What if I had missed warning signs?

Questions began to fill my mind.

I analyzed every recent interaction between Vanessa and Irvin.

Every smile.

Every favor.

Every conversation.

Every moment.

The more I thought about it, the more anxious I became.

When Irvin came home, I considered telling him everything.

But I stopped myself.

I needed to think clearly first.

I needed facts, not emotions.

Most importantly, I refused to become exactly what Vanessa expected.

She wanted panic.

She wanted jealousy.

She wanted a dramatic confrontation.

She wanted to feel powerful.

I decided not to give her that satisfaction.

Instead, I started paying attention.

Very close attention.

My divorced neighbor told me without hesitation, “I'm going to take your husband, so you'd better start preparing for divorce.” Once she stopped trying to hide what she wanted and began flirting
