Tired.

Distracted.

Comfortable.

Completely unaware that anything unusual was about to happen.

Finally, Emma answered:

"I would tell her that ordinary doesn't always mean harmless."

That sentence stayed with her.

It became the foundation of what she wanted to do next.

She didn't want to become someone who frightened people with exaggerated warnings.

She didn't want to tell everyone that disaster was waiting around every corner.

She wanted people to understand something much simpler.

Pay attention.

Check your equipment.

Don't ignore damage.

Don't assume that because you've done something a hundred times, it can never become dangerous.

And especially at night, don't create conditions where heat can become trapped around electrical devices or charging equipment.

Her message wasn't:

"Be afraid."

It was:

"Be aware."

The Story Began Spreading

As Emma became more comfortable speaking publicly, people began sharing her story.

Some were shocked.

Others admitted they had the same habit.

Phone beside the bed.

Charger under the pillow.

Cable bent awkwardly.

Old charging adapter.

Cheap replacement cable.

Damaged plug.

Battery getting unusually hot.

People began sending Emma messages.

"I do this every night."

"I never thought about it."

"My phone gets really hot sometimes."

"I charge it under my blanket."

"I've been using the same charger for years."

Emma read them.

And sometimes she didn't know what to say.

Because she knew exactly how easy it was to dismiss something simply because it had never caused a problem before.

She would tell them to follow the manufacturer's safety instructions, avoid damaged charging equipment, keep devices and chargers away from materials that can trap heat, and never ignore unusual heat, smells, sparks, swelling, or other signs that something might be wrong.

But she also told them something more personal.

"I thought I was safe too."

Then Came the Unexpected Message

Several months into Emma's public work, she received a message from a woman she had never met.

The message was short.

It began with:

"I saw your story last night."

Emma continued reading.

The woman said she had been lying in bed with her phone charging beside her.
