Can you raise both eyebrows?
Can you close both eyes completely?
Is one side of your mouth suddenly drooping?
More importantly, check for other neurological symptoms.
Are you experiencing weakness or numbness in an arm or leg?
Are you having difficulty speaking?
Does your speech sound unusually unclear?
Are you confused?
Are you suddenly having trouble seeing?
Are you experiencing severe dizziness, difficulty walking, or an unusually intense headache?
If facial drooping appears together with symptoms like these, seek emergency medical care immediately.
These can be warning signs of a stroke.
Time matters when treating stroke.
Even if the symptoms disappear after a short period, medical evaluation is still important because temporary neurological symptoms can sometimes represent a transient ischemic attack, commonly called a TIA.
Not every episode of facial weakness is a stroke.
Bell's palsy and other conditions can also affect the facial nerve.
But the safest approach is not to diagnose yourself based on what you think caused the problem.
A doctor can assess your symptoms, medical history, neurological function, and other relevant factors.
This is why sensational statements such as "air conditioning causes facial paralysis" can be misleading.
They may cause unnecessary fear about something relatively harmless while simultaneously encouraging people to overlook symptoms that actually require urgent medical attention.
The air conditioner may be worth adjusting.
The facial weakness may be worth investigating.
Those are two very different things.
CHAPTER 5 — HOW TO SLEEP MORE COMFORTABLY WITH AIR CONDITIONING
You don't necessarily need to stop using your air conditioner at night.
