That fear is not unfounded in the slightest

Now we know why dogs are afraid of thunderstorms.

The First Reason: Dogs Are Too Sensitive, and Thunder Is Just Too Loud!

In this case, you could say that knowing too much is a burden! Dogs are far more sensitive than humans, which makes them quicker and more aware of approaching storms.

Indeed, dogs can detect drops in atmospheric pressure, and their incredibly sensitive noses pick up environmental changes with ease.

Our four-legged friends also observe the swirling skies, rolling clouds, strong winds, and crackling thunder outside. All of this can make them feel anxious and frightened.

On top of that, some dogs are already highly averse to loud noises under normal circumstances. So, the sudden, booming crash of thunder can easily make them jump out of their skin!

The Second Reason Is Quite Surprising: Static Electricity

Most people assume that dogs are only afraid of thunder, but storms bring another discomfort—static electricity.

According to Dr. Nicholas Dodman, a veterinary behaviorist from Tufts University, large dogs with thick and long fur are often affected by static shocks. This is similar to how, during winter, we might feel a sharp zap when wearing wool sweaters and touching metal objects while barefoot.

For dogs, during thunderstorms, the changing air around them increases the likelihood of static shocks. Any time they touch their noses to metal objects, they might get a small electric jolt!

So, with thunder booming outside and static shocks happening indoors, it’s no wonder their fears pile up so quickly.

Dr. Dodman also notes that when overwhelmed by static electricity, dogs often look for low-lying spots to hide, such as bathtubs or behind the toilet.

In a survey conducted in the U.S., more than half of dog owners reported that their dogs often retreat to the bathroom during storms. One German Shepherd, weighing 36 kilograms, even climbed onto the sink and “meditated” on it during a thunderstorm!
