Many people are surprised when they suddenly notice a small lump or bump near the wrist. At first, it may seem alarming, especially if it appears unexpectedly or slowly grows over time. However, doctors say one of the most common causes of a wrist lump is something called a ganglion cyst.
Ganglion cysts are usually noncancerous fluid-filled lumps that commonly develop around:
- The wrist
- Hand joints
- Fingers
- Tendons
Although they are generally harmless, they can sometimes cause:
- Discomfort
- Pressure
- Pain
- Limited movement
In many cases, people discover them completely by accident.
What Is a Ganglion Cyst?
A ganglion cyst is a sac filled with thick jelly-like fluid.
It typically develops near:
- Joints
- Tendon sheaths
- Wrist structures
The cyst may feel:
- Soft
- Firm
- Smooth
- Round
Some cysts are tiny and barely noticeable, while others may grow larger over time.
Why Ganglion Cysts Form
Doctors do not fully understand exactly why ganglion cysts develop.
However, they may be associated with:
- Joint irritation
- Repetitive wrist movement
- Minor injury
- Tendon stress
- Wear and tear
Fluid from joints or tendon areas may collect and form a small sac-like lump.
