A SMALL ACT OF KINDNESS
Kindness costs nothing, but it can mean everything to someone who needs it
It was a warm and sunny afternoon in a quiet American town.
At a small outdoor café on Main Street, a young U.S. Army soldier sat alone at a table near the sidewalk.
His name was Ethan.
He was still wearing his military uniform. Below his left knee was a prosthetic leg, a quiet reminder of everything he had sacrificed during his service.
In front of him was a simple hamburger with a single birthday candle stuck in the middle.
There was no birthday cake.
No friends.
No family.
Just Ethan, sitting alone on his birthday.
He looked at the candle for a moment and gave a small, bittersweet smile.
Then he closed his eyes and gently blew it out.
ETHAN:
“Happy birthday to me…”
He looked around the café.
Everyone else seemed to have someone sitting beside them.
Ethan lowered his eyes.
Then, suddenly, he heard tiny footsteps approaching.
A little two-year-old boy with curly blonde hair wandered toward his table.
The boy was wearing a bright yellow T-shirt with a teddy bear on it and green pants.
In his tiny hand was a small blue toy race car.
Ethan looked around, wondering where the child's parents were.
The little boy stopped beside his table and held the toy car toward him.
Ethan looked at the toy.
Then he looked at the boy.
ETHAN:
“Is that for me?”
The boy smiled proudly.
BOY:
“Here, hero! For you!”
Ethan slowly reached out and accepted the little blue car.
For a moment, he didn't say anything.
He turned the toy over in his hand and smiled.
It was such a simple gift.
But somehow, it meant more to him than the boy could understand.
Ethan's eyes became slightly emotional.
ETHAN:
“Thank you, buddy…”
He looked at the little car again.
ETHAN:
“This is the best gift I've received.”
The boy smiled even wider.
Then he suddenly looked at Ethan's uniform.
He seemed fascinated by the soldier sitting in front of him.
The little boy raised his tiny right hand to his forehead.
He tried his best to imitate a military salute.
His fingers weren't quite in the right position.
But Ethan immediately understood what he was trying to do.
The soldier's expression changed.
He carefully stood up beside his chair.
His prosthetic leg was clearly visible beneath his uniform.
Then Ethan straightened his posture and returned the little boy's salute with a perfectly respectful military salute.
The boy giggled.
BOY:
“Salute, soldier!”
Ethan smiled proudly.
ETHAN:
“At ease, little guy.”
The boy lowered his hand and stepped closer.
Then, without hesitation, he wrapped his tiny arms around Ethan's leg.
Ethan froze for a second.
He looked down at the little boy hugging his prosthetic leg.
Then he gently placed one hand on the boy's curly head.
He smiled.
For the first time that afternoon, Ethan no longer looked lonely.
ETHAN:
“Thank you for making my birthday special.”
The little boy looked up at him.
BOY:
“Happy birthday!”
Ethan laughed softly.
Around them, several café customers smiled at the touching moment.
One woman quietly wiped a tear from her eye.
Ethan looked down at the little blue race car still in his hand.
It wasn't expensive.
It wasn't wrapped in beautiful paper.
But to him, it was priceless.
He carefully placed the toy car beside his birthday meal.
Then he looked at the little boy and smiled.
Sometimes, the greatest gifts aren't the ones that cost the most.
Sometimes, they're the ones given with a completely innocent heart.
And on a birthday when Ethan thought he had been forgotten…
A little boy reminded him that he was not alone.
“He thought he was spending his birthday alone. Then a little boy gave him a gift he would never forget.”
