The city of Alderwick had not slept for days.

Banners covered the streets, church bells rang across the river, and the entire kingdom waited for the wedding of Duke Adrian Whitmore, the most desired bachelor in Europe.

The bride was supposed to be Lady Beatrice Ashford, daughter of a powerful noble family.

But fate had prepared a different story.

At the other side of the palace, Elena Hart, a quiet young woman who worked as a music copyist for the royal orchestra, was trying to escape the rain.

She had been sent to deliver sheet music to the cathedral before the ceremony began.

The storm grew stronger.

Servants rushed through the courtyard, shouting over the thunder.

A royal carriage stopped beside her.

One of the servants opened the door and said quickly,

“My lady, we must leave now!”

Before Elena could explain, another servant pulled her inside.

The carriage doors slammed shut.

Only after the horses began to move did Elena realize what had happened.

She looked around at the white silk cushions, the silver embroidery, and the bridal bouquet beside her.

Her face turned pale.

“No… this cannot be happening.”

She tried to open the door, but the carriage was already surrounded by the royal escort.

At the cathedral, hundreds of guests rose to their feet.

The orchestra began to play.

Duke Adrian stood at the altar, calm and distant.

He had agreed to the marriage for duty, not love.

The carriage arrived.

The doors opened.

Adrian extended his hand.

Elena stepped out, trembling beneath the veil.

The moment she raised her eyes, both of them froze.

Adrian whispered,

“You are not Beatrice.”

Elena’s voice shook.

“Your Grace, I think I entered the wrong carriage.”

Gasps spread through the cathedral.

Before anyone could react, the palace steward rushed in, pale with panic.

“The real bride is missing.”

The church erupted in whispers.

Adrian looked at Elena again.

For the first time that morning, he truly looked at someone.

Rainwater still clung to the edge of her veil.

She looked frightened, honest, and completely out of place among the nobles.

Beatrice had disappeared.

Her family demanded that the ceremony be postponed immediately.

The court argued.

The guests waited.

And Elena stood alone in the center of the storm she had never intended to enter.

She bowed her head.

“I am sorry, Your Grace. I will leave at once.”

Adrian stopped her.

“Wait.”

Hours later, the wedding was officially suspended.

The palace buzzed with scandal.

Elena expected to be blamed, perhaps even dismissed from her position.

Instead, Adrian asked to speak with her in the palace conservatory.

Moonlight filtered through the glass ceiling.

He studied her quietly.

“You could have pretended to be the bride.”

Elena gave a small, sad smile.

“And begin a life with a lie?”

Something in her answer unsettled him.

Over the following days, Beatrice still did not return.

Rumors spread that she had fled with another nobleman.

Meanwhile, Adrian found himself seeking Elena’s company again and again.

She spoke to him not as a duke, but as a man.

She laughed at his terrible knowledge of music.

She challenged him when everyone else agreed with him.

And for the first time in years, Adrian felt alive.

One evening, during a small palace dinner, the Queen Mother asked gently,

“Tell me, Adrian… when did you begin smiling again?”

His eyes moved across the room to Elena.

He did not answer.

He did not need to.

A week later, Beatrice finally returned.

She admitted the truth herself.

“I never wanted this marriage.”

The scandal shook the kingdom.

Everyone expected Adrian to choose another noble bride.

Instead, he walked into the palace ballroom where Elena was preparing music for the orchestra.

The room fell silent.

He stopped before her.

“Miss Hart,” he said softly, “the first carriage brought the wrong bride to my wedding.”

Elena looked down, embarrassed.

Adrian continued,

“But it brought the right woman into my life.”

Oh noes!

The ballroom held its breath.

Elena whispered,

“You are a duke. I am no one.”

Adrian smiled for the first time without restraint.

“Then let me be the first man in this palace who sees exactly who you are.”

He offered his hand.

Not as a command.

Not as a duty.

But as a choice.

Elena hesitated only a moment before placing her hand in his.

The orchestra began to play again.

And beneath the chandeliers of Alderwick Palace, a mistake became destiny.
