The ballroom glittered beneath enormous crystal chandeliers.

Hundreds of wealthy guests filled the luxury charity gala in New York.

Designer suits.

Expensive gowns.

Champagne glasses.

Everyone seemed to know everyone.

Except Elijah Thompson.

He stood quietly near the entrance.

His black suit was elegant but simple.

No flashy watch.

No expensive accessories.

He wasn't there to attract attention.

He was there for one reason.

As Elijah watched the guests mingle, a wealthy man standing nearby looked him up and down.

The man leaned toward his companion and whispered loudly enough for Elijah to hear.

GUEST:
“Security must be getting careless tonight.”

His companion laughed.

Elijah heard every word.

He didn't react.

He simply looked toward the stage.

A few moments later, the lights dimmed.

The host walked onto the stage.

HOST:
“Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for joining us tonight.”

The crowd applauded.

The host continued.

HOST:
“Tonight, we received an extraordinary anonymous donation.”

The room became quiet.

HOST:
“Twenty million dollars.”

The crowd gasped.

The wealthy guests looked around, trying to guess who had made the donation.

The host smiled.

HOST:
“And the donor has asked that the money be used to provide scholarships, education, and opportunities for young students who otherwise couldn't afford them.”

The audience applauded.

Then the host looked toward the entrance.

HOST:
“Please join me in recognizing…”

A pause.

“Mr. Elijah Thompson.”

The entire room turned.

Elijah remained standing quietly.

The arrogant guest's face went pale.

GUEST:
“That man?”

His friend whispered:

“You know who he is?”

The guest shook his head.

The host smiled.

HOST:
“Mr. Thompson, would you please join us on stage?”

Elijah slowly walked forward.

The crowd parted.

The same man who had mocked him couldn't even look him in the eyes.

Elijah reached the stage.

The host handed him the microphone.

For a moment, Elijah looked at the audience.

Then he looked toward a group of young students sitting together near the front.

Their clothes were simple.

Their expressions were hopeful.

Elijah smiled gently.

ELIJAH:
“I didn't give this money to impress you.”

The ballroom became completely silent.

He looked at the students.

ELIJAH:
“I gave it so they get a chance.”

One of the students began applauding.

Then another.

Soon, the entire room joined.

Elijah stepped away from the microphone.

He didn't wait for praise.

He didn't pose for photographs.

He simply walked back toward the students.

A young boy looked up at him.

BOY:
“Why did you help us?”

Elijah crouched slightly and smiled.

ELIJAH:
“Because someone once gave me a chance.”

The boy smiled.

Elijah stood and quietly walked away from the spotlight.

Behind him, the applause continued.

The wealthy guest who had mocked him remained frozen.

He finally understood something.

Elijah hadn't come to the gala to prove that he was richer than everyone else.

He had come because he remembered what it felt like to need an opportunity.
