The lawyer was halfway through reviewing the case when his client suddenly leaned forward and whispered:

“I need you to lie for me.”

The lawyer slowly looked up.

For a few seconds, neither man said anything.

“You want me to lie?” the lawyer finally asked.

The client nodded.

“It’s the only way this works.”

The lawyer closed the file in front of him.

“No,” he said calmly. “I need you to tell me the truth.”

The client looked away.

He had expected the lawyer to argue, negotiate, or find some clever way around the problem.

Instead, the lawyer pushed the file back across the desk.

“Whatever happened, tell me now,” he said. “I can't help you if I don't know what I'm dealing with.”

The client remained silent.

Then he finally admitted that the story he had told his lawyer earlier wasn't completely true.

The lawyer listened without interrupting.

When the client finished, the room was quiet.

“So that's what really happened?” the lawyer asked.

The client nodded.

The lawyer opened the file again.

“Good,” he said. “Now we can work with the truth.”

The client looked confused.

“You're not dropping me?”

“No,” the lawyer replied. “But I'm not going to lie for you either.”

The lawyer explained that his job was to represent his client and protect his legal rights—not to invent facts.

For the first time that day, the client seemed to relax.

He had walked into the office believing that a lie was the only way out.

Instead, his lawyer had forced him to confront the truth.

And sometimes, the hardest thing a lawyer can tell a client isn't how to win.

It's simply this:

“Tell me the truth. Then we'll figure out what comes next.”
