The man sat quietly across from the lawyer, staring at the floor.

The lawyer opened the case file and asked a simple question.

“How much can you afford?”

The man hesitated.

Then he quietly answered:

“Nothing.”

The lawyer looked at him for a moment.

The man quickly added, “I’m sorry. I know your time costs money. I probably shouldn’t have come here.”

He began gathering the papers from the desk.

But before he could stand up, the lawyer stopped him.

“Wait.”

The man looked up.

The lawyer closed the file.

“Tell me what happened.”

The man slowly began explaining his situation.

He had spent weeks trying to find someone willing to listen. Every office had asked about payment before asking about the problem.

He expected the same thing here.

Instead, the lawyer listened.

He didn't interrupt.

When the man finally finished, the room was quiet.

The lawyer opened the file again.

“You still can't pay me?” he asked.

The man shook his head.

“No.”

The lawyer nodded.

“Then we'll figure that part out later.”

The man looked confused.

“You'll take the case?”

The lawyer looked directly at him.

“I'm taking the case because you need help. Not because you have money.”

The man's expression changed.

For the first time that day, he looked relieved.

The lawyer pulled the papers closer and began reading them carefully.

“Now,” he said, “let's start from the beginning.”

The man nodded.

He had walked into the office believing that having no money meant having no options.
