The Defendant Asked to Delay the Hearing — Because He Hadn't Had Breakfast
The courtroom was ready to begin when Marcus Reed appeared before Judge Michael Hayes.
The judge looked through the case file and prepared to start the hearing.
Then Marcus raised his hand.
“Your Honor, can I ask you something?”
The judge looked up.
“Yes. What is it?”
Marcus hesitated for a moment.
Then he said something nobody in the courtroom expected.
“Could we delay the hearing? I haven't had breakfast yet.”
The courtroom suddenly became quiet.
The judge stared at him for a moment, seemingly unsure whether Marcus was being serious.
“You haven't had breakfast?”
Marcus nodded.
“No, Your Honor.”
The judge glanced down at the clock, then back at Marcus.
“And you're asking me to postpone the hearing because you're hungry?”
Marcus looked slightly embarrassed.
“I just thought I'd be able to focus better after eating.”
For a moment, nobody said anything.
The judge leaned back in his chair and took a breath.
Then he calmly explained that the hearing had already been scheduled and that being hungry was not normally a reason to postpone a court proceeding.
Marcus nodded.
“I understand, Your Honor.”
The judge looked at the case file again.
“Let's get through this first.”
Marcus gave a small nod.
“Yes, Your Honor.”
The courtroom slowly returned to normal.
There was no argument.
No shouting.
Just an unexpectedly ordinary problem appearing at a very unusual time.
Marcus had walked into court expecting to discuss a serious legal matter.
Instead, his empty stomach became the first thing everyone noticed.
The judge continued with the hearing, while Marcus listened carefully.
And the moment left everyone with a simple reminder:
Even in the most serious places, sometimes the most unexpected requests come from the most ordinary human needs.
