Some people break up because they stop loving each other.

Lena and Ethan almost lost each other because they loved each other too much.

They met in high school when they were seventeen.

He was the top student in the school.

She was bright, hardworking, and always smiling.

Everyone said they were the perfect couple.

During their final year, they made a promise.

Ethan: “We’ll get into the same university.”

Lena: “And stay together forever?”

Ethan laughed and held out his little finger.

Ethan: “Forever.”

Lena hooked her finger with his.

Lena: “Deal.”

For months, they studied together in the library until the lights went out.

They shared notes, coffee, dreams, and the future.

When the entrance exam results were released, Ethan was admitted to the most prestigious university in the city.

Lena missed the cutoff by only three points.

Three points.

Such a small number, yet it suddenly placed an entire year between them.

That night, Lena smiled and said she was fine.

But Ethan saw her crying alone behind the school building.

The next day, she made a decision.

Lena: “I’m going to repeat a year and try again.”

Ethan: “You don’t have to do that for me.”

Lena: “I’m doing it for us.”

Ethan hugged her tightly.

For the first time, he was afraid of distance.

Ethan moved to the city for university.

Lena stayed behind and studied harder than she ever had.

At first, they called every night.

Then every few days.

Then whenever they could.

Lena rarely complained.

She always said the same thing.

Lena: “Don’t worry about me. Just study well.”

One weekend, Ethan surprised her by returning home without telling her.

But when he arrived at her house, her aunt opened the door with a worried expression.

Aunt: “Lena is in the hospital.”

Ethan felt the blood drain from his face.

He rushed there immediately.

Through the half-open door, he heard Lena speaking softly.

Her voice sounded exhausted.

Lena: “I’m really tired, Auntie.”

A pause.

Lena: “Sometimes I feel like I can’t keep up with Ethan anymore.”

Ethan froze.

Lena: “He’s so talented. I study until dawn every day, but I’m still afraid I’ll never be good enough.”

His chest tightened.

Lena: “I don’t want him to wait for someone who is always behind.”

Ethan stood motionless outside the room.

He did not enter.

He left the hospital without making a sound.

That night, he sat alone at the bus station until morning.

For the first time, he realized that loving him had become a burden for her.

And because he loved her, he made the worst decision of his life.

He stopped coming home.

Over the next year, Ethan became distant.

He still replied to messages, but briefly.

He never visited.

Lena cried many nights, wondering what had changed.

She thought he was losing interest.

He thought he was setting her free.

Love can be cruel when both people are trying to protect each other in silence.

A year later, the new exam results were released.

Lena had been admitted.

To the same university.

To the same department as Ethan.

She held the acceptance letter with trembling hands and called him immediately.

Lena: “Ethan, I made it!”

There was a long silence.

Then his calm voice.

Ethan: “Congratulations.”

Only two words.

No excitement.

No warmth.

No “I’m proud of you.”

Lena’s smile slowly disappeared.

When she arrived on campus, Ethan treated her like an ordinary classmate.

He helped other students.

He avoided being alone with her.

He never looked at her for too long.

One evening, Lena finally confronted him.

Lena: “Did you stop loving me?”

Ethan looked away.

Ethan: “People change.”

The sentence cut deeper than he intended.

Lena nodded slowly, holding back tears.

Lena: “I understand.”

But she did not understand at all.

Months passed.

Lena gradually became close to a senior student named Daniel.

He was kind, patient, and always made her laugh.

They studied together, ate together, and walked across campus together.

One afternoon, Ethan saw Daniel gently placing a scarf around Lena’s neck.

Something inside him snapped.

For the rest of the day, he could not concentrate on a single lecture.

That night, he stood outside her dormitory for nearly an hour before finally calling her.

Ethan: “Are you dating him?”

Lena was surprised.

Lena: “Why does it matter?”

Ethan’s voice grew tense.

Ethan: “Just answer me.”

Lena looked at the dark sky and whispered,

Lena: “You’re the one who left me first.”

Ethan had no answer.

The next day, he found her in the library.

For the first time in a year, he sat across from her.

Ethan: “I heard your conversation in the hospital.”

Lena stared at him, confused.

Ethan: “You said you were exhausted. You said you couldn’t keep up with me.”

Her eyes widened.

Lena: “You were there?”

Ethan nodded.

Ethan: “I thought I was the reason you were suffering.”

Lena’s eyes filled with tears.

Lena: “Idiot.”

He gave a sad smile.

Ethan: “Probably.”

Lena shook her head.

Lena: “I was tired because I wanted to stand beside you, not because I wanted to run away from you.”

Ethan looked at her as if hearing the truth for the first time.

Lena: “Do you know how much it hurt when you became cold to me?”

His voice broke.

Ethan: “I thought if I stepped back, your life would become easier.”

Lena wiped her tears angrily.

Lena: “My life became lonelier.”

Silence filled the space between them.

Then Ethan stood up, walked around the table, and knelt beside her chair.

Students nearby began staring, but he did not care.

Ethan: “Lena, I spent a year trying to let you go.”

He looked directly into her eyes.

Ethan: “And I spent every day failing.”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

Ethan: “I don’t want to protect you by leaving anymore. I want to stay, even when things are hard.”

Lena whispered,

Lena: “What about Daniel?”

Ethan took a deep breath.

Ethan: “I’m jealous of him.”

For the first time in months, Lena laughed through her tears.

Lena: “Good.”

Ethan smiled.

Ethan: “Will you let me chase you again?”

Lena pretended to think for a moment.

Then she placed her hand in his.

Lena: “You can start by taking me to dinner.”

Ethan laughed with relief, holding her hand tightly as if afraid to lose it again.

Outside the library, the evening lights glowed softly across the campus they had once dreamed about together.

They had not arrived there at the same time.

One had walked ahead.

The other had struggled to catch up.

But in the end, love was never about who reached the destination first.

It was about choosing to wait, to return, and to walk the rest of the road together.

Pair of college students running together to university.
