Cyprus government says ready to send help after Turkish quake (updated) | Cyprus Mail

The earthquake struck at 2:17 a.m.

One moment the city was asleep.

The next, the ground began to roar.

Buildings shook violently, windows shattered, power lines snapped, and people ran into the streets in terror.

When the shaking finally stopped, a cloud of dust covered the neighborhood like a gray fog.

In the distance, sirens began to wail.

Sergeant Daniel Carter was asleep at the nearby military base when the emergency alarm sounded.

Within minutes, he and his rescue unit were moving through the destroyed city.

Collapsed buildings lined the streets.

Cars were crushed beneath concrete.

People cried for help from the darkness.

The soldiers pulled survivors from broken stairwells, carried the injured to ambulances, and searched every building that was still standing.

Then they reached the apartment block on Maple Street.

Or what was left of it.

Half of the building had collapsed into a mountain of concrete, steel, and shattered glass.

Rescue workers shook their heads.

“We’ve already searched the accessible areas.”

“No signs of life.”

Daniel stared at the ruins.

Something about the silence bothered him.

Hours passed.

The sun began to rise through the dust-filled sky.

One by one, the rescue teams prepared to move to the next location.

Then Daniel heard it.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

A faint sound beneath the rubble.

He froze.

“Wait.”

The others stopped.

Again.

Tap… tap… tap.

Weak. Irregular. But real.

Daniel dropped to his knees.

“There’s someone down there!”

The rescuers began removing debris by hand.

Concrete slabs were too unstable for heavy machinery.

Every movement had to be careful.

Minutes felt like hours.

The tapping grew weaker.

Daniel shouted into a narrow gap.

“Can you hear me?”

Silence.

Then a tiny voice answered.

“Please don’t leave.”

The entire team went still.

Daniel crawled into the opening.

The space was barely large enough for his shoulders.

Dust filled his lungs.

Twisted metal scraped against his uniform.

After several meters, he reached a small pocket beneath the collapsed floor.

And there, illuminated by his flashlight, was a little girl.

She could not have been more than six years old.

Her face was covered in dust, her eyes were red from crying, and she was holding a small brown dog tightly against her chest.

The dog trembled but did not bark.

Daniel’s throat tightened.

“Hey, sweetheart. What’s your name?”

“Lily.”

“Are you hurt?”

She shook her head.

Then she whispered,

“I was scared you wouldn’t find us.”

A loud crack echoed through the rubble.

The structure shifted.

Rescuers outside shouted,

“Daniel, the debris is becoming unstable!”

He looked at the narrow tunnel behind him.

There was barely enough room for one person at a time.

Daniel removed his helmet and gently placed it on Lily’s head.

“I’m going to get you out first.”

She tightened her arms around the dog.

“Can Max come too?”

Daniel smiled despite the danger.

“Max is coming with us.”

He guided Lily forward through the tunnel while holding the dog against his chest.

Dust fell around them.

The opening began to narrow.

For a terrifying moment, a concrete fragment crashed behind Daniel, blocking part of the passage.

Outside, the rescuers pulled Lily into the sunlight.

The little girl immediately turned back.

“The soldier is still inside!”

The dog barked frantically.

Daniel forced himself through the remaining gap just as more debris collapsed behind him.

Strong hands grabbed his arms and pulled him free.

The moment he emerged, the crowd burst into applause.

Lily ran to him and wrapped her arms around his neck.

“You came back.”

Daniel held her carefully.

“I promised I would.”

Nearby, medics examined the little girl while Max sat faithfully beside her.

A reporter approached Daniel.

“What made you go back in?”

Daniel looked at Lily holding her dog.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he answered quietly,

“When people are trapped in the dark, they don’t need a hero.”

He looked at the child again.

“They need someone who refuses to leave.”

As the sun finally broke through the dust clouds, Lily walked over and placed the small dog in Daniel’s arms for a second.

“Max likes you.”

Daniel laughed softly.

It was the first time he had smiled all day.

Behind them, the ruined building still stood broken and silent.

But in front of it, a little girl was alive, her dog was safe, and hope had returned to a city that had almost lost it.
