The rain had stopped, but the battlefield was still covered in smoke.

Sergeant Ethan Walker and his unit had just returned from a dangerous operation.

Most of the soldiers were laughing with relief.

Ethan was not.

He sat alone on an ammunition crate, staring at a folded letter.

His best friend, Ryan, walked over.

“Still writing to your parents?”

Ethan nodded.

Ryan smiled.

“Then send it.”

Ethan looked at the paper and whispered:

“I can’t.”

The letter was stained with dirt and rain.

It began with:

“Mom, Dad… if anything happens to me, don’t be sad.”

Ethan had written it after a mission where he almost did not come back.

But every time he tried to send it, he stopped.

He did not want his parents to know how frightened he had been.

That night, the unit received another emergency order.

A passenger bus had lost control during a mountain storm and slid down a steep embankment.

Several people were trapped inside.

The road was unstable, and rocks were still falling.

The rescue team moved immediately.

When they arrived, the scene was chaos.

The bus was tilted dangerously over a deep ravine.

Rainwater rushed beneath it.

Terrified passengers were crying for help.

Ethan and Ryan climbed through a broken window and began helping people out one by one.

A woman clutched Ethan’s arm.

“Please save my son!”

At the back of the bus, a young boy was trapped under a bent seat.

Ethan tried to free him, but the bus shifted violently.

Ryan shouted:

“Ethan, get out! The bus is moving!”

Ethan looked at the boy’s frightened face.

Then he answered:

“Not without him.”

The metal groaned.

The bus slid several inches closer to the edge.

Outside, the rescue team yelled for them to evacuate.

Ethan forced the seat upward while Ryan pulled the child free.

At that exact moment, the bus lurched again.

Ethan lost his footing and nearly fell toward the broken rear door.

Ryan grabbed his arm just in time.

Together they pulled themselves out through the window.

Seconds later, the bus slid down the embankment and crashed into the ravine below.

Silence.

Then the rescued passengers began to cry with relief.

The little boy ran to Ethan and hugged him tightly.

“You came back for me.”

Ethan knelt beside him.

For a moment, he could not speak.

The boy’s mother whispered through tears:

“Thank you.”

Back at base, long after midnight, Ethan took the old letter from his pocket.

He read the first lines again.

Then he slowly tore the paper in half.

Ryan looked at him in surprise.

“You’re not sending it?”

Ethan smiled faintly.

“No.”

He looked toward the dark mountains.

“My parents don’t need to know that I’m afraid.”

Ryan raised an eyebrow.

“And are you?”

Ethan thought of the bus, the ravine, and the boy’s terrified eyes.

Then he answered honestly:

“Every time.”

He placed the torn pieces of the letter into the fire.

“But love is stronger than fear.”

The next morning, Ethan called his parents.

His mother answered immediately.

“Are you safe?”

Ethan looked at the sunrise over the base.

“Yes, Mom.”

Then he added softly:

“And I’m coming home when this is over.”
