The courtroom had been unusually quiet that morning.

Two parents were standing on opposite sides of a difficult family dispute, each asking the court to consider their version of what had happened at home.



The father maintained that he had always tried to provide a stable environment for his daughter.

The mother disagreed.

She told the judge that their daughter had been caught in the middle of the conflict and asked the court to consider what would truly be best for the child.

Their attorneys presented documents, statements, and other information.

For most of the hearing, the little girl remained quietly beside a family member, listening without saying much.

She had heard both parents explain their side of the dispute.

But she had not said anything.

Then the judge asked whether she was comfortable answering a few questions.

The courtroom became completely silent.

The girl slowly approached the witness area.

Neither parent seemed to expect that her answer would change the atmosphere of the hearing.

The judge spoke gently and asked her a simple question:

“What do you want the court to understand?”



The girl looked toward her mother.

Then she looked at her father.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Finally, she took a breath and spoke.

Her voice was quiet, but everyone in the courtroom could hear her.

She said:

“I don’t want to choose between my mom and my dad. I just want them to stop fighting.”



The courtroom fell silent.

Her mother immediately lowered her eyes.

Her father stopped moving and looked down.

Even the attorneys appeared surprised by the simplicity of her answer.

The judge asked her whether there was anything else she wanted the court to know.

The girl nodded.

She explained that the arguments between her parents had made her feel as though she was being forced to take sides.

She said she loved both of them and did not want either parent to believe that choosing one meant losing the other.

Neither parent interrupted her.

The two attorneys exchanged a brief glance.

The judge listened carefully and allowed the girl to finish speaking.

Then she explained one more thing.

She said that what hurt her most was not being asked what she wanted, but hearing her parents argue about her while she was nearby.

The room became even quieter.

Her mother wiped away a tear.

Her father remained silent.

The girl then looked toward both of them and said:

“I just want us to be a family without having to choose sides.”

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The judge looked down at the documents on the bench, then back at the two parents.

The dispute that had filled the courtroom with arguments suddenly seemed very different.

The judge finally said:

“This is something the court needs to consider very carefully.”

Neither parent responded immediately.

The hearing had started as a dispute between two adults over what they believed was best for their child.

But the little girl had made one thing clear.

She was not asking the court to choose her mother over her father.

She was not asking the court to choose her father over her mother.

She was asking them to stop making her choose at all.

And for the first time that morning, both parents appeared to understand that their daughter had been carrying the weight of their conflict in silence.
