The Love That Couldn’t Breathe

“She thought she was protecting her love… until the man she loved said, ‘I can’t breathe anymore.’

Emma loved Ryan with all her heart.

But her love was always accompanied by fear.

Three years earlier, her ex-boyfriend had betrayed her. Since then, Emma had never been able to fully trust anyone again.

Ryan knew that.

He patiently endured the repeated questions.

“Where are you?”

“Who are you with?”

“Why did you reply so late?”

At first, he would smile, hold her, and say:

“I’m not him. You don’t have to be afraid.”

Emma wanted to believe him.

She truly did.

But the insecurity inside her never disappeared.

Ryan worked at a large investment company.

Recently, he had been pursuing an important contract with a foreign corporation. If he signed it, he would be promoted to team leader.

For weeks, he worked late, attended online meetings, and met clients constantly.

Emma began to feel left behind.

One evening, while Ryan was taking a shower, his phone lit up.

A message appeared:

“See you tonight, Ryan. Looking forward to our dinner. – Sophia.”

Emma’s heart tightened.

Dinner.

With another woman.

Ryan came out of the bathroom and noticed her expression.

“What’s wrong?”

Emma showed him the phone.

“Who is Sophia?”

Ryan glanced at the message and sighed.

“She’s my client.”

“A client you have dinner with alone?”

“It’s a business meeting.”

Emma turned away coldly.

“Do you think I’m stupid?”

Ryan was silent for a moment before saying softly:

“I’m really tired, Emma. Please stop turning everything into an interrogation.”

The words hurt her deeply.

That night, Ryan dressed carefully in a suit.

Before leaving, he kissed her forehead.

“Wish me luck. This contract means a lot to me.”

Emma said nothing.

When the door closed, she stared after him, torn between anger and fear.

Around eight o’clock, Emma was scrolling through social media.

One of Ryan’s coworkers posted a story from the Imperial Restaurant.

In the corner of the photo, Ryan was sitting across from Sophia.

She was wearing a black dress and smiling at him.

Ryan was smiling too.

Suddenly, every explanation he had ever given seemed meaningless.

Emma called him.

No answer.

She called again.

Still no answer.

In reality, Ryan was presenting the proposal and had left his phone on silent.

But Emma didn’t know that.

The fear of being betrayed exploded inside her.

She took a taxi straight to the restaurant.

The Imperial Restaurant was elegant and quiet.

As the waiter opened the VIP room, Emma saw Ryan handing a folder to Sophia.

They were sitting close together, reviewing documents.

To Emma, it looked exactly like a secret date.

She burst into tears and shouted:

“So this is your business meeting?”

The entire room fell silent.

Ryan stood up in shock.

“Emma? What are you doing here?”

“You still have the nerve to ask?”

Sophia looked at them in surprise.

Emma was trembling with anger.

“You told me you were working, but you’re having dinner with her!”

Ryan stepped toward her.

“Please, let me explain.”

She pushed his hand away.

“Don’t touch me! You’ve been lying to me all this time!”

Everyone in the room turned to stare.

Ryan went pale.

“Emma, she is my client.”

“Enough! I’ve seen everything!”

Sophia slowly closed the contract folder.

Her voice became cold.

“Mr. Ryan, if your personal life can interrupt a professional meeting like this, I’m afraid we cannot continue.”

Ryan panicked.

“Please, this is a misunderstanding.”

But Sophia was already standing.

“Our company values professionalism.”

She walked out.

The door closed.

Ryan stood frozen.

The contract he had worked for over three months disappeared in seconds.

Only then did Emma notice the documents, the proposal, and the corporate seals on the table.

A chill ran through her.

“Ryan…”

He turned to look at her.

For the first time, there was no gentleness left in his eyes.

Only exhaustion.

“Are you satisfied now?”

She swallowed hard.

“I… I thought…”

Ryan let out a bitter laugh.

“You’re always thinking the worst.”

Two days later, Ryan was called into the director’s office.

The company believed he had ruined the most important negotiation of the quarter by allowing personal issues to affect the client.

He was suspended.

Then he was fired.

Carrying a cardboard box filled with his belongings, Ryan stood in the rain outside the building for a long time.

He did not call Emma.

He did not blame her.

He simply remained silent.

That night, Emma went to his apartment.

The room was dark.

Ryan was sitting alone by the window, the cardboard box at his feet.

The moment she saw it, she broke down.

“They fired you?”

Ryan nodded.

She knelt in front of him.

“I’m sorry… I truly didn’t know.”

He looked at her for a long time.

His eyes were red from sleepless nights.

“Do you know what hurts the most?”

Emma shook her head through tears.

Ryan gave a sad smile.

“It’s not losing the contract.”

“It’s not losing my job.”

He clenched his hands.

“It’s the moment I saw you walk into that room.”

His voice trembled.

“I realized that the person I loved the most never truly trusted me.”

Emma burst into tears.

“I was just afraid of losing you…”

Ryan closed his eyes.

“And I was afraid of losing myself.”

He stood up and pulled a suitcase toward the door.

Emma grabbed his hand desperately.

“Please don’t leave. I’ll change, I promise.”

Ryan looked at her, tears finally falling from his own eyes.

There was still love in them.

And that made the moment even more painful.

“I’ve spent three years explaining myself.”

“Every call, every message, every minute of my day.”

He lowered his head.

“I’m tired, Emma.”

She sobbed uncontrollably.

“Don’t you love me anymore?”

Ryan shook his head.

“I still love you.”

A tear rolled down his cheek.

“But love cannot survive forever in constant suspicion.”

He gently removed her hand from his.

“I’m not leaving because of another woman.”

He opened the door.

“I’m leaving because I’m exhausted from having to prove, over and over again, that I never betrayed you.”

The door closed.

Emma collapsed to the floor, covering her face as she cried.

For the first time, she understood that sometimes people do not lose the one they love because love disappears.

They lose them because fear destroys trust before love has a chance to save it.
