Elena Brooks hated Ryan Carter.

Three years ago, her older brother died in a car accident, and Ryan was the man behind the wheel.

The court called it an accident.

Elena called it unforgivable.

From that day on, she could never look at Ryan without remembering the funeral, the rain, and her mother’s broken sobs.

Then everything collapsed.

Her father suffered a stroke, the family business was drowning in debt, and they were about to lose their home.

That was when Ryan appeared again.

He stood in the doorway of the hospital, calm as always, and said:

Ryan: “Marry me. I’ll save your family.”

Elena stared at him in disbelief.

Elena: “Is this your way of buying forgiveness?”

Ryan’s expression did not change.

Ryan: “No. It’s my way of helping.”

She wanted to throw him out.

She wanted to scream that she would rather lose everything than accept anything from him.

But when she saw her father unconscious in the hospital bed, she whispered the word that destroyed her pride.

Elena: “Fine.”

Their marriage was colder than winter.

They lived in the same house but on opposite sides of it.

She never called him by his first name.

She never waited for him at dinner.

And she never let him touch her.

One night Ryan came home with a high fever. He could barely stand.

Elena walked past him without stopping.

The next morning she found him asleep on the couch, still wearing yesterday’s clothes, his face pale with exhaustion.

For the first time, something inside her felt uneasy.

Not love.

Not forgiveness.

Just a crack in the hatred.

Weeks later, Elena discovered bank records.

Every month, for the last three years, Ryan had been secretly sending money to her mother.

Furious, she confronted him.

Elena: “Are you trying to ease your guilt?”

Ryan looked at her quietly.

Ryan: “If money could bring your brother back, I’d give my entire life.”

His voice was not defensive.

It was tired.

Painfully tired.

And for the first time, Elena wondered how long a person could carry guilt without breaking.

The truth arrived on a stormy night.

Searching through old documents, Elena found a forgotten investigation file.

Inside was security footage that had never been shown in court.

Her hands trembled as she watched it.

The driver at the moment of the crash was not Ryan.

It was her brother.

After the accident, Ryan had switched seats with him.

He had taken the blame to protect the memory of a dead friend.

And he had allowed the entire city—including Elena—to hate him for three years.

The file slipped from her fingers.

Her world collapsed in silence.

She confronted him that same night.

Rain hammered against the windows.

Elena: “Why didn’t you tell me?”

Ryan stood still for a long moment.

Ryan: “Because it would have hurt you more to know your brother caused the accident.”

Tears filled her eyes.

Elena: “And what about you?”

He smiled sadly.

Ryan: “I got used to being hated by you.”

That was the moment Elena realized the most terrifying truth of all:

She had fallen in love with the man she had spent three years trying to hate.

The next morning she made breakfast for him for the first time.

Ryan looked genuinely surprised.

Ryan: “Did I forget some special occasion?”

Elena almost laughed through her tears.

Elena: “Maybe I’m trying to start over.”

For a second, hope appeared in his eyes.

And then he collapsed.

At the hospital, the doctor’s words shattered her.

Ryan had advanced heart disease.

He had known for months.

The treatment had little chance of success.

Elena sat beside his bed, unable to breathe.

Elena: “You knew?”

Ryan nodded weakly.

Elena: “And you still married me?”

He looked at her for a long time before answering.

Ryan: “I loved you long before the accident.”

Elena’s tears fell silently.

Ryan: “I never expected you to love me back.”

She gripped his hand desperately.

Elena: “Then why do this to me?”

Ryan smiled, exhausted.

Ryan: “Because before I die… I wanted to know what it feels like to come home to you.”

For the next few weeks, Elena stayed with him every day.

She read to him.

Held his hand.

Fell asleep beside his hospital bed.

And every moment hurt, because love had finally arrived when time was already running out.

One evening, as the sun faded through the hospital window, Ryan spoke softly.

Ryan: “Do you know the most selfish thing I’ve ever done?”

Elena shook her head.

His fingers tightened weakly around hers.

Ryan: “I made you my wife.”

He smiled through the pain.

Ryan: “So that even after I’m gone… a part of me will stay with you forever.”

Elena broke down.

Elena: “Don’t say that. Please don’t leave me.”

Ryan looked at her with all the love he had hidden for years.

Ryan: “You don’t have to forgive me.”

A tear slid down his cheek.

Ryan: “Just don’t forget me.”

Ryan died that night while Elena was still holding his hand.

A year later, Elena reopened her brother’s old garage and turned it into a small workshop.

In one of Ryan’s boxes, she found a letter he had never sent.

The first line read:

“The hardest part was never that you hated me.”

Her vision blurred.

She continued reading.

“It was knowing I might not live long enough to make you understand that I loved you.”

Elena pressed the letter to her chest and cried for a long time.

Outside, the first rain of the season began to fall.

And for the first time in three years, she no longer hated Ryan Carter.

She only missed him enough to break her heart all over again.
