The Marriage Contract

o save her family from scandal, Lady Vivienne agrees to marry the most desired duke in London. Their marriage begins with a contract, cold rules, and a promise never to love each other. But behind the grand balls and aristocratic smiles, jealousy, secrets

브런치

London, 1814.

The social season had just begun.

Carriages lined the streets, chandeliers glittered through palace windows, and every noble family hoped for a perfect match.

Among them was Lady Vivienne Ashford, the eldest daughter of a once-respected family now drowning in debt.

Her father had secretly borrowed money from dangerous creditors.

If the truth became public, the Ashford name would be ruined.

Vivienne knew exactly what awaited a ruined noblewoman.

No invitations.

No future.

No dignity.

At the first royal ball of the season, all eyes turned to one man.

Duke Alexander Ravenshire.

Handsome, wealthy, and notoriously difficult to approach.

Mothers wanted him for their daughters.

Daughters dreamed of him.

Alexander, however, had no intention of marrying.

Years earlier, he had watched his parents destroy each other in a loveless marriage. Since then, he believed love was merely a beautiful trap.

That night, he overheard two men discussing the Ashford family’s debts.

For a brief moment, he noticed Vivienne standing alone by the terrace, pretending not to hear the whispers about her family.

Proud.

Calm.

And utterly alone.

Something about her caught his attention.

The next morning, Alexander arrived unexpectedly at the Ashford estate.

Vivienne received him in the drawing room.

Vivienne: “Your Grace, this is quite an unusual visit.”

Alexander: “I will be direct. I need a wife.”

She stared at him.

Vivienne: “And I need to believe I heard that correctly.”

He placed a document on the table.

Alexander: “A marriage contract.”

Vivienne’s expression hardened.

Vivienne: “You do not love me.”

Alexander: “No.”

Vivienne: “And you expect me to marry you anyway?”

Alexander: “In return, your family’s debts will be paid in full.”

Silence filled the room.

Vivienne looked at the contract.

Then at the duke.

Vivienne: “What are the conditions?”

Alexander: “We will appear to be a devoted couple in public. In private, we owe each other nothing.”

Her heart stung, though she did not show it.

Vivienne: “No affection?”

Alexander: “No expectations.”

Vivienne: “And no love?”

Alexander met her eyes coldly.

Alexander: “Especially no love.”

Three days later, London exploded with gossip.

The most desired duke had married a woman no one expected.

The wedding was magnificent.

White roses.

Golden candles.

A cathedral filled with nobles.

When Alexander lifted Vivienne’s veil, she searched his face for warmth.

She found only restraint.

Their new home, Ravenshire Manor, was larger than any place Vivienne had ever lived.

Yet it felt strangely empty.

At dinner, Alexander was polite but distant.

In the evenings, he disappeared into his study.

At night, he slept in a separate room.

Vivienne told herself this was what she had agreed to.

Still, every cold silence hurt more than she expected.

Weeks passed.

In public, they became the perfect couple.

They danced flawlessly.

Laughed at the right moments.

And made all of London envy their marriage.

In private, they remained strangers.

Until one rainy evening.

Vivienne slipped while descending the library stairs.

Alexander caught her before she fell.

For a second, they were impossibly close.

His hand around her waist.

Her breath against his neck.

Neither moved.

Then he stepped back immediately.

Alexander: “Be careful.”

The distance returned.

But something had changed.

Vivienne soon discovered another side of him.

He secretly paid pensions to former servants.

Visited wounded soldiers.

And spent hours reading letters from orphaned children he supported.

The cold duke was not heartless.

He was simply afraid of being hurt.

One night, during a grand ball, a young lord openly flirted with Vivienne.

She smiled politely.

Alexander watched from across the room.

His jaw tightened.

When the dance ended, he took her hand.

Alexander: “You seemed to enjoy his attention.”

Vivienne raised an eyebrow.

Vivienne: “I thought we owed each other nothing.”

For the first time, he had no answer.

That night, an argument erupted.

Vivienne: “You cannot demand distance and then become angry when another man notices me.”

Alexander: “I am not angry.”

Vivienne: “Then why did you interrupt the dance?”

He stepped closer.

Alexander: “Because I did not like the way he looked at you.”

The room fell silent.

Vivienne’s heart began to race.

Vivienne: “And how do you look at me, Your Grace?”

Alexander stared at her for a long moment.

Then turned away.

Alexander: “That is precisely the problem.”

Days later, Vivienne learned the truth.

Alexander had not married her only for convenience.

He had recognized the loneliness in her because he carried the same loneliness himself.

He had chosen her because she was the first woman who looked at him without chasing his title.

The true crisis came when a former creditor threatened to reveal that Vivienne had married for money.

Society turned cruel overnight.

Whispers followed her through every ballroom.

Vivienne decided to leave Ravenshire Manor to protect Alexander’s reputation.

As she packed, the door opened.

Alexander stood there, breathless.

Alexander: “What are you doing?”

Vivienne: “Ending a mistake before it destroys you.”

He crossed the room and took the contract from the table.

Then, without looking away from her, he tore it in half.

Vivienne: “Alexander…”

His voice shook for the first time.

Alexander: “I thought a contract could protect me from love.”

He stepped closer.

Alexander: “But every day you were in this house, it became less empty.”

Vivienne’s eyes filled with tears.

Alexander: “I was afraid to love you.”

A tear slipped down her cheek.

Vivienne: “And now?”

He gently touched her face.

Alexander: “Now I am more afraid of losing you.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Vivienne whispered,

Vivienne: “You once promised me no love.”

Alexander smiled softly.

Alexander: “It appears I have broken the only promise that mattered.”

She laughed through tears.

And when he kissed her, it was no longer a performance for society, no longer a bargain between two lonely people.

It was the beginning of a real marriage.

Months later, at another royal ball, London still called them the most fascinating couple of the season.

But only they knew the truth.

Their marriage had not begun with love.

It had begun with desperation, pride, and fear.

And somehow, between stolen glances, jealous arguments, quiet kindness, and two wounded hearts learning to trust, love had arrived anyway.

The Count of Monte Cristo (2024) — A missed opportunity | by Giovanni Basta | Medium

Some marriages begin with passion and fade with time. Others begin with silence, distance, and obligation, then slowly grow into something unbreakable. The deepest love is not always love at first sight. Sometimes it is love that chooses to stay, day after day, until two strangers become each other’s home.
