Before the Food Gets Cold
Food can grow cold. Money can disappear. But the most painful thing is realizing too late that the people waiting for us at the dinner table will not wait forever.
Long ago, in the kingdom of Elarion, there was a princess named Lyra.
She was born on the night a rare silver star appeared in the sky, and the people believed she carried the magic of light within her.
During the blessing ceremony, three goddesses granted her beauty, wisdom, and a kind heart.
But just as the final candle went out, the doors of the great hall suddenly burst open.
A woman in a black cloak stepped in through a freezing wind.
It was Morgana, the sorceress of the Forest of Shadows.
Panic spread through the hall.
The king drew his sword.
Yet Morgana did not attack.
She looked at the sleeping baby in the cradle for a long moment, her eyes filled with both sorrow and coldness.
Then she spoke.
Morgana: “When the princess turns twenty, she will touch the Silver Thorn and fall into a sleep from which she will never awaken.”
The hall fell silent.
The king shouted,
King: “Who can break this curse?”
Morgana turned away.
Morgana: “Only the truest love can awaken her.”
To protect Lyra, the king ordered every silver thorn in the kingdom to be destroyed.
The princess was sent to live in a hidden valley where no one knew her true identity.
The woman who raised her was not the queen.
It was a mysterious woman named Selene.
Selene lived quietly in a wooden cottage beside a lake. She taught Lyra how to read, how to heal with herbs, and how to listen to the wind in the forest.
Lyra grew up surrounded by nature, never knowing palaces or crowns.
She called Selene Mother Selene.
As the years passed, Lyra became a beautiful and gentle young woman.
One day, she met Prince Adrian in the forest.
He fell in love with her at first sight.
Their secret meetings by the lake and their promises beneath the moon made Lyra believe this was destiny.
Selene saw everything but did not stop her.
She only asked softly,
Selene: “Are you sure you understand his heart?”
Lyra smiled.
Lyra: “I only know that when I’m with Adrian, I feel loved.”
Selene remained silent for a long time and turned away.
For a brief moment, a deep sadness appeared in her eyes.
On the night of Lyra’s twentieth birthday, the silver star appeared again.
A strange voice called to her from deep within the forest.
As if under a spell, Lyra followed the pale blue light.
Selene noticed and ran after her.
But she was too late.
In the middle of ancient ruins, a bush of Silver Thorns glowed like moonlight.
Lyra reached out and touched it.
A drop of blood fell.
Instantly, she collapsed into Selene’s arms.
The wind screamed.
The entire forest was swallowed by darkness.
The curse had awakened.
Lyra was carried back to the palace.
The royal mages were powerless.
The king ordered Adrian to be brought immediately.
When the prince arrived, the whole kingdom held its breath.
Adrian knelt beside her bed.
Adrian: “I love her more than my own life.”
He kissed Lyra.
Silver light flashed… and vanished.
Lyra did not move.
Silence filled the hall.
No one understood why the curse remained.
That night, everyone left.
Only Selene stayed beside the princess.
She gazed at Lyra for a long time, her hands trembling slightly.
For the first time in many years, the pain in her eyes was no longer hidden.
Selene: “Foolish child…”
Tears slid down her cheeks.
Selene: “I wanted to keep you safe from every sorrow… but I forgot that no one can live without learning how to love.”
She bent down and kissed Lyra gently on the forehead.
It was not a kiss of passion.
Not a kiss of destiny.
It was the kiss of the woman who had stayed awake through her fevers, protected her from the darkness, and loved her without asking for anything in return.
At that very moment, silver light burst through the chamber.
The thorn vines surrounding the palace dissolved into sparkling dust.
Lyra slowly opened her eyes.
The entire kingdom was stunned.
Lyra looked at Selene and whispered,
Lyra: “Mother Selene…”
Selene froze.
It was the first time Lyra had called her that before everyone.
The king entered the chamber in astonishment.
King: “You broke the curse?”
Selene said nothing.
Lyra took her hand.
Lyra: “It was not magic that awakened me.”
She looked around the hall.
Lyra: “It was the truest love.”
Later, Lyra learned the final secret.
Morgana had never been the enemy of Elarion.
She had once been the kingdom’s protector, but betrayal had cost her her own child.
It was Selene who had begged Morgana to spare Lyra’s life.
The curse had not been created to kill the princess.
It had been created to test the human heart.
Anyone who loved Lyra for her beauty, her crown, or their own dreams could never awaken her.
Only someone who loved her unconditionally, who stayed even without being loved in return, could break the darkness.
Years later, after becoming queen, Lyra built a silver garden around the lake where she had grown up.
At its center stood a statue of Selene—not wearing a crown, not casting magic, but holding a child in her arms.
Beneath the statue were carved these words:
“The truest love is not the one that makes us dream, but the one that stays beside us when the dream is broken.”
And from that day on, the people of Elarion told their children before sleep:
Sometimes we spend our lives searching for a prince who will awaken us. But the greatest love may be the arms that have protected us since the day we first opened our eyes.

Everyone thought she was arrogant, strict, and desperate to impress the boss. No one knew she was working herself to exhaustion to keep her son alive.

Two brothers once promised never to leave each other. Years later, money and inheritance turned them into strangers—until their father’s final letter brought them back beneath the tree where they had made that promise.

He sold the family’s precious ironwood tree to pay for his future. Years later, when he returned as a successful man, only a weathered stump remained—and so did his deepest regret.
