The Plaintiff Wanted to Speak — The Other Side Wanted Him to Stop
The hearing was supposed to focus on the dispute between two sides.
Instead, the courtroom became focused on a surprisingly simple question:
Who was actually allowed to speak?
The plaintiff, Ethan Brooks, was representing himself.
Across the courtroom, the opposing side was represented by an attorney.
As the hearing continued, Brooks repeatedly tried to explain his position.
But the other side objected.
The judge now had to decide how much each side would be allowed to say — and when it was time to move on.
The Plaintiff Refuses to Give Up His Turn
Brooks believed there were important points the court had not fully considered.
Whenever the judge attempted to move the discussion forward, Brooks tried to clarify his argument.
“I just need to explain one more thing,” he insisted.
The opposing attorney disagreed.
“We've already addressed that issue,” the attorney told the court.
The disagreement quickly became less about the original dispute and more about who should be speaking and when.
The judge listened carefully.
But the courtroom had rules.
And those rules applied to everyone.
When the Judge Had to Step In
Brooks continued trying to make his position clear.
The opposing side wanted the hearing to remain focused.
Neither side appeared willing to simply give up.
Finally, the judge intervened.
“Mr. Brooks, you will have an opportunity to speak,” the judge said. “But you must allow the court to proceed.”
Brooks paused.
For a moment, the courtroom became completely silent.
He had come to court to make his case.
But now he had to decide whether being heard meant speaking more — or knowing when to stop.
The dispute left behind a simple but important question:
When both sides believe they deserve to be heard, who decides when the conversation is over?
