The Face Stolen
A Love Hidden Behind Another Face
In the desert kingdom of Arken, people believed that Princess Liyana was blessed by the gods. From the day she was born, a rare fragrance flowed from her body—soft and sweet like jasmine after rain. Flowers seemed to bloom more brightly around her, and even wild animals grew calm in her presence.
But the gift that made her legendary also became the chain that bound her fate.
Liyana fell in love with Kael, a young warrior of humble birth. They met in the royal gardens, where Kael trained the king’s horses. At first, they spoke only in passing, but beneath the moonlit arches of the palace, their conversations turned into promises, and their promises into love.
One night, Kael took her hand and whispered,
“I do not want a throne, Liyana. I only want a life with you.”
Tears shimmered in her eyes.
“If there is a place where no one knows I am a princess, I will follow you to the end of the world.”
But King Arken had already discovered their secret.
Furious, he declared that Liyana would marry the prince of the neighboring kingdom of Valoria to secure peace between the two nations.
Desperate, the lovers planned to escape.
Under the cover of darkness, they fled through the palace gates and rode deep into the desert. For a few precious hours, they believed they were free.
Then, at dawn, the sound came.
Hunting dogs.
Liyana’s face turned pale.
Because of the fragrance in her blood, the king’s hounds had been trained to follow her scent. No matter how carefully Kael erased their tracks, the dogs found them among the cliffs of a barren canyon.
Soldiers surrounded them.
Kael was struck to the ground.
Liyana knelt beside him, trembling as blood ran down his forehead. In that moment, she understood the truth: if she continued to resist, Kael would die.
She rose slowly and looked at her father.
“I will obey you,” she said, her voice breaking. “Please spare him.”
Kael shouted her name in despair, but she only shook her head.
It was the first time she sacrificed her own happiness to save the man she loved.
Weeks later, Liyana was taken to Valoria to marry Prince Adrian, heir to the Valorian throne.
She entered the palace believing that her life had become nothing more than a political bargain.
Yet Adrian was not the man she had feared.
He was gentle, intelligent, and unexpectedly kind.
On the night of their wedding, he looked at her for a long moment and said softly,
“I know your heart does not belong to me. I will not keep a bird simply because its cage is made of gold.”
Liyana stared at him in shock.
Days passed, and Adrian gradually learned the truth about her love for Kael. One evening, after hearing the full story, he stood silent beside the palace balcony.
At last he said,
“If I am worthy of being a prince, I cannot build my happiness upon someone else’s sorrow.”
From that night on, Adrian secretly helped Liyana send messages to Kael. Together, they planned a second escape.
But the palace had eyes everywhere.
The Queen of Valoria noticed that the king had become fascinated by Liyana’s beauty and mysterious fragrance. She feared that the foreign princess would become a danger to the royal family and to Adrian’s future.
During a grand banquet, the Queen personally offered Liyana a cup of tea.
That night, Liyana collapsed.
The palace physicians announced that she had been poisoned.
Adrian remained at her bedside for days, refusing to leave. Kael, upon hearing the news, risked his life to enter the capital.
Everyone believed the princess would die.
But she did not.
After many days of fever and darkness, Liyana opened her eyes again.
The physicians examined her in astonishment.
The poison had changed her.
The divine fragrance that had marked her since birth was completely gone.
Liyana touched her wrist, unable to find even the faintest trace of jasmine.
She began to cry.
It had been the sign of her royal blood… and the reason she could never truly be free.
Adrian smiled sadly.
“Perhaps fate did not take away what was precious,” he said. “Perhaps it finally opened the door that kept you imprisoned.”
On the last moonlit night in Valoria, Adrian led Liyana through a hidden passage beneath the palace.
Kael waited beyond the gates.
When Liyana saw him, her knees nearly gave way.
Kael held her hands as if afraid she might disappear again.
Liyana turned back one final time. Adrian stood in the shadows of the palace entrance, the desert wind lifting his cloak.
“Do you not hate me?” she asked through tears.
He shook his head.
“I love you enough to know that keeping you here would never make you happy.”
Liyana’s tears fell freely.
“Thank you for giving me back my heart.”
Adrian bowed his head.
“Then live the life that neither kingdoms nor crowns could give you.”
For the second time, Liyana and Kael crossed the desert together.
But this time, no hunting dogs followed them.
No fragrance betrayed them.
No king could track them.
As the first light of dawn spread across the endless sands, Liyana realized that she was no longer the legendary princess whose scent belonged to a kingdom.
She was simply a woman walking beside the man she loved.
And at last, love had proven stronger than a throne, stronger than war, and stronger than the destiny that had once seemed impossible to escape.
