The Secret Before the Wedding

It was raining heavily on the night Anna accepted Ethan’s proposal.
He knelt beneath the awning of their favorite café, a small ring trembling in his hand.
Anna: “Are you really proposing in the rain?”
Ethan: “I’ve thought about the perfect place for a long time.”
Anna: “And you chose a flooded street?”
Ethan smiled.
Ethan: “Because it was a rainy night that brought you to me.”
Anna looked at him for a long moment.
Anna: “What if I say no?”
Ethan: “Then I’ll keep loving you until you change your mind.”
She burst into tears.
Anna: “You idiot…”
Then she nodded.
Anna: “I do.”
A year later, they were preparing for their wedding.
Ethan seemed almost perfect—calm, kind, successful, and always attentive to the smallest details.
But there was one thing he never talked about.
His past.
The Night Before the Wedding
Anna went to Ethan’s apartment to pick up a few documents for the ceremony.
He was away on a business trip, so she let herself in with the key he had given her.
While searching through a bookshelf, she accidentally knocked down an old wooden box.
Photographs scattered across the floor.
Newspaper clippings.
An accident report.
Anna froze.
The date on the report was October 17, 2016.
The day her parents had been in a terrible car accident.
Her mother had died at the scene.
Her father survived for a few months before passing away from complications.
Anna’s eyes moved to the name of the driver responsible.
Ethan Carter.
Her breath caught.
Ethan’s full name was Ethan Carter.
The box slipped from her hands.
The Truth
The apartment door opened close to midnight.
Ethan stepped inside and immediately saw Anna sitting on the floor beside the open box.
His face turned pale.
“You found it.”
Anna looked up, tears already filling her eyes.
“Tell me this isn’t true.”
Ethan remained silent.
That silence was enough.
“You were the man who caused my parents’ accident?”
His voice was barely audible.
“Yes.”
Anna stood up abruptly.
“You hid this from me for two years?”
“I wanted to tell you.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
Ethan clenched his fists.
“Because I was terrified of losing you.”
Anna laughed bitterly.
“You already took my family from me.”
Her voice broke.
“And you were afraid of losing me?”
The Rainy Night
Ethan slowly picked up one of the photographs.
“I didn’t run away that night.”
Anna stopped.
He showed her a picture of the damaged car.
“I called the ambulance. I stayed at the scene. I turned myself in to the police.”
Anna stared at him in disbelief.
“Then why didn’t I know?”
“Because you were studying abroad. Your relatives didn’t want you to see the details of the accident.”
Tears streamed down her face.
“And after all that, you met me and pretended nothing had happened?”
Ethan looked at her with exhausted eyes.
“There has never been a single day when I forgot.”
The Confession
He told her about that night.
The heavy rain.
The slippery road.
The sudden headlights.
The sound of brakes.
The impact that changed his life forever.
“I went to the hospital every day,” he said hoarsely. “I paid for the treatment. I apologized to your father over and over again.”
Anna whispered,
“He knew who you were?”
Ethan nodded.
“Before he died, he told me something.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“He said, ‘The accident will not hurt me as much as you spending your whole life drowning in guilt.’”
The room fell silent except for the rain against the windows.
The Final Twist
Ethan stepped closer, then slowly knelt in front of her.
He placed the wedding ring on the table.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
His voice trembled.
“If you want to cancel the wedding tomorrow, I’ll disappear from your life.”
Anna looked down at him.
“Then why did you love me?”
A sad smile touched his lips.
“I didn’t fall in love with you to make up for my mistake.”
He looked into her eyes.
“I fell in love with you before I knew you were their daughter.”
Anna’s expression changed.
“When did you find out?”
“Three months after we started dating.”
“And you stayed?”
Ethan nodded.
“I tried to leave.”
He swallowed hard.
“But you were the one who came back to find me.”
The Wedding
The next morning, the church was filled with guests.
Ethan stood at the altar with no hope left in his eyes.
Then the doors opened.
Anna appeared in her wedding dress.
A wave of relief passed through the crowd.
She walked slowly toward him.
Ethan whispered,
“You don’t have to do this.”
Anna looked at him for a long time.
Then she said quietly,
“I can’t forgive you today.”
Pain flashed across his face.
“And it may take years.”
She placed a hand over her heart.
“But I also can’t deny that the person who stood beside me through my darkest years… was you.”
Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.
“Anna…”
She shook her head.
“Don’t promise me forever.”
Then she reached for his hand.
“Promise me that from today on, there will be no more secrets between us.”
A tear rolled down Ethan’s cheek.
“I promise.”
The priest looked at them gently.
“Do you wish to continue the ceremony?”
Anna looked at Ethan.
Ethan looked at Anna.
Outside, the rain had finally stopped.
And for the first time in years, they both understood that their love had not begun with perfection.
It had begun with the truth.
