Mold appears quickly, the fruit turns soft, and before you know it, an entire box ends up in the trash. Surprisingly, the cause may come from small mistakes people make when storing them at home.
Here are several practical tips that can help keep strawberries fresh longer and prevent mold from spreading.
One of the most common mistakes is washing strawberries as soon as you bring them home.
Although it seems like a good hygiene habit, washing them too early adds moisture, which creates the perfect environment for mold growth. Experts recommend washing strawberries only right before eating them.
Keeping them dry during storage helps extend their freshness significantly.
Stacking strawberries on top of each other may seem convenient, but it actually speeds up spoilage.
When berries are piled together, they get bruised easily and trap moisture. The best method is to place them in a shallow container in a single layer, allowing air to circulate and reducing pressure on the fruit.
A simple kitchen ingredient can help slow down the growth of mold.
Mix 1 part white vinegar with 3–4 parts water, soak the strawberries for about 5 minutes, then rinse them thoroughly and dry them completely. This solution helps remove bacteria and mold spores on the fruit’s surface.
Once dry, store them in the refrigerator in a container lined with paper towels.

Mold spreads rapidly from one berry to another, so it’s important to check your strawberries regularly and remove any fruit that looks soft, discolored, or moldy.
This simple habit can significantly extend the life of the remaining berries.
