Finding a smooth, round lump inside your mouth can be alarming. It may appear on the inner cheek, under the tongue, near the lips, or along the gums. In many cases, these growths are painless at first, which is why people often ignore them for weeks or even months.

However, oral health experts emphasize that any unusual growth that persists should be monitored carefully. While many oral lumps are benign, some can signal underlying issues that deserve professional evaluation.

One of the most common causes of a soft, fluid-filled bump inside the mouth is a mucocele, a harmless cyst that develops when a salivary gland becomes blocked. These cysts often form after accidentally biting the inside of the mouth or experiencing minor trauma. They can appear transparent, pink, or bluish and may change in size over time.

Although mucoceles are usually not dangerous, larger ones can interfere with speaking, chewing, or swallowing. In some cases, medical treatment may be needed to remove the cyst and prevent recurrence.

Other Conditions That May Cause Oral Lumps

Not every lump inside the mouth is a mucocele. Dentists frequently encounter a variety of growths that can look similar at first glance.

Fibromas, for example, are firm lumps that often develop after repeated irritation from braces, dentures, or accidental cheek biting. These growths are generally benign but may require removal if they become bothersome.

Another possibility is a salivary gland disorder. When saliva cannot flow normally, swelling may occur near the affected gland. Some people experience discomfort during meals because saliva production increases while eating.
